Sometimes, you’re not looking for a cat… until the right one finds you.

After losing her cat Alf, Florence’s adopter wasn’t looking for another furry friend. Then a neighbour spotted Florence on the StraySafe website and thought they might be the perfect match.

After a home visit, Florence quickly settled in with Boris, another rescue cat, and the pair are now the best of companions.
Her adopter describes her as:

🍽️ A little minx when it comes to food

💕 A proper lap cat
🥰 And, above all, incredibly loving

Why Do Black Cats Often Wait Longer for Homes? 🐈‍⬛

Black cats are just as loving, playful and deserving of homes as any other cat.

Yet many rescues report that black cats often spend longer waiting for adoption than cats of other colours.

There are a number of theories as to why this happens.

Some people believe it is linked to old superstitions and myths.

Others suggest that black cats can be harder to photograph, making them less noticeable in adoption posts.

Whatever the reason, the result is often the same.

Whilst more unusual colours and patterns may attract immediate interest, black cats can be overlooked despite having wonderful personalities.

At rescues across the country, many black cats spend months waiting for the right family to notice them.

Those who do adopt black cats often become some of their biggest advocates.

Wow, we’re overwhelmed! ❤️

Over the last week we’ve seen an incredible amount of love and support across our social media. So many new people have joined us, shared our posts, followed our journey and cheered us on.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.

The reality though is that with more people finding StraySafe comes something else… a huge increase in requests for help.

Every day we’re contacted about cats that desperately need somewhere safe to go. Every day we wish we could say yes.

Right now, like many rescues, our doors remain closed to new intakes. Not because we don’t want to help, but because we don’t currently have enough foster homes or the funds needed to safely take on more cats.

The biggest thing standing between us and reopening is rebuilding our foster network.

Whether you could foster for a few weeks, a few months, care for a cat with ongoing medical needs, or even help hand rear kittens in an emergency, you could make all the difference.

We’ll provide the food, litter and veterinary care. You simply provide a safe place, patience and lots of love.

Once we’ve rebuilt our foster network and strengthened our funds, we’ll be able to reopen our doors and continue doing what we’re here to do: giving more cats and kittens the second chance they deserve.

Every new foster home means another cat doesn’t have to be turned away.

Have you ever met a cat who thinks every day should be playtime? 🐾

That would be Nutella. ❤️

He has enough energy to keep himself entertained for hours, whether he’s chasing toys, investigating every corner of the house or turning the most ordinary things into the greatest game ever invented. Life is never boring when Nutella is around.

But when he’s finally worn himself out, he’s more than happy to curl up nearby and enjoy some well earned relaxation before doing it all over again. 🥹

Nutella is looking for a forever home where he can be his playful, curious self and where someone will appreciate his fun-loving personality just as much as we do.

Poor Francis… it’s probably no surprise that he isn’t the biggest fan of cat carriers. 💔

After everything he’s been through, being abandoned and left in one outside a shop, we can’t blame him for feeling that way.

He certainly let his fosterer know exactly what he thought about the journey home. 😹

Thankfully, it didn’t take long for him to realise this carrier was taking him somewhere safe.

A good meal, a comfy bed and a pile of new toys soon worked their magic.

Now he’s settled in… and he’s become very attached to one particular toy. 😂

He proudly carries it around the house in his mouth and makes sure nobody gets anywhere near it. It’s his treasure now, and he’s not taking any chances. ❤️

After everything Francis has been through, seeing him feel safe enough to play is exactly what we were hoping for.

We’re leaving him in a carrier… outside.

First person who finds him can keep him.

That is what somebody genuinely thought was acceptable.

Earlier this week, we received an email from White Cross Vets Manchester - Sale asking if we could help.

This handsome boy, now named Francis, is around 5 years old. He was found abandoned outside Sainsbury’s in a pet carrier, hidden beneath blankets, lying in his own urine and faeces. We have no idea how long he had been left there…

The team at White Cross Vets took him in immediately, gave him a full health check and made sure he was safe. Sadly, he wasn’t microchipped, he wasn’t neutered, and despite their efforts to find his owner by sharing him online, nobody came forward.

The good news? Somebody did come forward wanting to offer Francis a forever home.

So, Francis has now been microchipped, received his first vaccination, been treated for fleas and worms, and today he was castrated too.

This evening he has settled into one of our wonderful foster homes with Laura, where he’ll stay while we complete the homecheck and adoption paperwork for his potential new family.

After everything he’s been through, Francis is still the sweetest, most trusting boy who absolutely adores a fuss. Cats never fail to amaze us with their resilience.

We do love a quick turnaround, especially when it means another cat is one step closer to the happy ending they deserve. ❤️

🎉 44 of our rescued cats have found their furever homes this year! 🏡❤️

Every one of those 44 cats has a story, and every one of them now has a family to call their own.

A huge thank you to our amazing volunteers, foster carers, adopters and supporters. We couldn’t do any of this without you. 💜🐾

🐾 Happy Tails: Cleo 🏠

We’re always so happy to receive updates from our adopters, and Cleo’s latest news has made us smile. ❤️

🌿 Cleo has settled into her new home beautifully and is proving to be a very confident little girl. After mastering the cat flap, she’s been enjoying exploring the garden and finding the perfect spot to relax in the sunshine.

🍗 Cleo is also a big fan of chicken and will happily follow her family into the kitchen in the hope of a tasty treat! Her favourite sleeping spot is currently at the top of the stairs, and she greets everyone with the sweetest little chirping sound when she comes back inside. 🥹

❤️ It’s clear that Cleo is now very much part of the family, and we couldn’t be happier that she has found the loving home she deserves.

🙏 A huge thank you to Cleo’s adopter for giving her the happy ending she was waiting for.

Jack is making tiny steps… and we’re so proud of him. 🤎

Just one week ago, Jack would only come out when nobody was around. His new foster home was scary, unfamiliar and full of things he didn’t quite trust yet.

Yesterday, something changed.

For the very first time, Jack came out while his fosterer was in the room… and even wandered over for a gentle fuss. 🥹

Today, he’s been even braver. He came out again, settled down right beside his fosterer and gave himself a proper wash, which is a lovely sign that he’s starting to feel just that little bit safer.

He’s still a very anxious boy. A sudden movement or unexpected noise will send him straight back to his hiding place. But confidence isn’t built overnight, it’s built through little moments exactly like these.

Every tiny victory is a huge milestone for Jack, and we can’t wait to see what next week brings. ❤️
