OFF-LEAD FREEDOM IS EARNED — NOT GIVEN.

Something I’m very particular about when welcoming a new dog is off-lead freedom.

I know it can be tempting to expect your dog to be off lead straight away. But for me, trust and freedom are built through time, consistency and evidence — not assumptions.

Every new dog starts on lead so we can build familiarity, understand their behaviour and establish a relationship.

From there, we work with a long line to proof recall around distractions and higher-arousal environments. I need to know that your dog responds to me and chooses to come back — even when something more exciting is happening.

Only when I’m confident that the dog is ready will we progress to off-lead freedom, and even then, the environment and circumstances matter. Carefully risk-assessed locations are part of that process - sometimes off lead is only appropriate for a dog in a secure paddock.

And importantly, this isn’t a one-time test. I continually assess every dog. If their behaviour changes, the environment presents additional risks, or I simply feel that being on lead is the safer choice that day — we go back to lead walks.

If you’re looking for someone who will let your dog off lead immediately because “they’re always good”, I may not be the right walker for you.

But if you want someone who earns that freedom, continually reassesses it, and is prepared to put the lead back on whenever necessary, then we’re probably a right fit. ✅

Every dog walking service is different.

Different experience. Different values. Different ways of working.

Some dogs thrive in solo walks. Others flourish in a structured pack environment. As owners, you’re fortunate to have the freedom to choose the service that best suits your dog’s needs.

Over the last two weeks, I’ve received several new enquiries, which has been fantastic. But one thing I’ll never do is accept a dog simply to fill a space.

At Paws & Relax Maidenhead, every dog is assessed long before their first walk. From temperament and breed-specific behaviours to confidence, social skills and compatibility, I take the time to ensure each dog is introduced to the right environment.📑

Paws & Relax may be the right fit if:

✅ Your dog enjoys the company of other dogs and thrives in a social environment.

✅ You value consistency, commitment and reliability.

✅ You appreciate regular updates, including video stories and individual photos.

✅ You understand that off-lead freedom is earned through time, trust and proven recall.

✅ You want your dog to benefit from positive social experiences within a carefully managed group.

My priority has always been the welfare of the dogs in my care. That means being honest when a group environment isn’t the right fit.

Not every dog will suit my service, and my service won’t suit every dog. And that’s absolutely fine.

Because finding the right environment for your dog will always be more important than filling a space on a walk. 🫡

Something nobody really tells you when you care for dogs is just how attached you become — even when they’re not technically yours.

Very quickly they’ve woven themselves into your daily rhythm in a way you never expected: you start to learn every quirky little habit, you notice when something seems off. And it’s not just the dogs — you build real relationships with their owners too. You share updates, worries, little victories, and over time you become part of each other’s routine.

This has been especially true of Simba. He’s been part of my week ever since I left the corporate world and threw myself fully into Paws and Relax. He arrived with his big personality and quickly became one of those dogs who quietly anchors your day.

Now he’s getting ready for a big relocation, and today is his last day. Thank you J and E for allowing him to become a little piece of our world too. We are going to miss him! 🧡

🇫🇷 The Beauceron comes from the Beauce region of France and was bred to herd and guard livestock. They’re known for their black‑and‑tan or harlequin coats, their double dewclaws, and their nickname “Bas Rouge” — the red “stockings” on their legs. They’re confident, clever, powerful dogs that require a confident and consistent handler familiar with managing dominant breeds. They form exceptionally deep, intense, and lifelong bonds with their human families, often manifesting as a fierce loyalty that combines the protective drive of a guardian with the extreme sensitivity of a herding breed.

Beaucerons typically stand around 65–70cm at the shoulder and can weigh 30–45kg. They were used in World Wars for guarding, carrying messages, and even land‑mine detection.

🐕 Why it matters for a dog walker to understand breeds

Knowing a dog’s breed isn’t about stereotypes — it’s about understanding the instincts, energy levels and behaviours that shape how a dog experiences a walk

With a guarding breed like Donny, that means understanding:

•how he assesses strangers
•how his behaviour influences my decisions out walking
•how I provide consistent handling to keep the walk controlled and safe

A dog walker who understands breeds can tailor the walk properly — keeping dogs safe, settled and handled in the way that suits THEIR instincts.

As we head into the summer holidays — and as I’m lucky enough to have a second pair of hands helping me — I’d love to give something back to someone in our local community who might be finding things a bit harder right now.

If you know someone in Maidenhead who is struggling to walk their dog — maybe due to recent surgery, mobility changes, or simply not being able to get out like they once did — I’d like to offer them a free weekly dog‑walking slot over the summer.

This would be a gentle, friendly group walk with me, and their dog would need to be:

🐕 Well‑socialised with other dogs
🐕 Comfortable in small group walks
🐕 Local to Maidenhead

🐾 June Recap 🐾

What a month it’s been.

Lots of muddy paws.
Lots of panting tongues.
Lots of adventures with dogs returning home happily exhausted.

No scheduled posts
No chasing likes

Just dogs being dogs — exactly how it should be.

One thing I’ve really reflected on lately is that not every dog, or owner, thrives with a rigid fixed approach.

Life happens.
Work changes.
Unexpected emergencies come up- today was a prime example of that for one of my clients!

Some dogs just need consistency and a familiar face when things change suddenly.

That’s why I really get to know each of the dogs in my care — understanding their personalities, little quirks and compatibility with the other dogs in the pack and most importantly bonding with them individually.

I genuinely love how well the dogs know and trust each other now. It creates calmer, happier walks and such a lovely dynamic within the group.

Honestly, it feels a little crazy to say I’m now operating with a waiting list. I’m incredibly grateful for all the lovely owners who continue recommending me. 🐕

I’m also very excited that over the summer I’ll have another pair of hands helping out — the better half officially joining the madness. This will give greater flexibility and allow some extra walk availability over the summer months.

If you’ve been waiting for a space, keep an eye out as additional dog walks will be opening up. 🐾

It’s been full-on puppy mode the past couple of weeks — the new youngsters have definitely been keeping me on my toes. Lots of training walks and socialisation to keep them on track.

Quick update: my books are now officially full, so I’m not taking on any new clients at the moment. This is to ensure I can give flexibility and time to my existing client base. Thank you for keeping me busy and allowing me to do what I love!
