About Us

Family Dogs Services is a family run business run by married couple Claire & John Denyer since 2015

“Our mission is to help dog owners get their training right first time and help them correct any unpredictable behaviours that occur during their dogs development"

We have always had dogs in our families. We lost our first black Labrador Gemma to old age in 2011. Our second Labrador was Indy, she was our first working gundog, and she is the reason that we became dog trainers. We now have the pleasure of owning three black Labradors from working lines (Dude, Rose, and Genie)

Although initially we trained our working dogs as a hobby and for the joy of watching our dogs do what they were bred to do, we have, over the years become passionate and committed to dog training and behaviour on many levels, from training gundogs to work in the field and compete, to helping owners live better lives with their pet dogs. We are thrilled to be able to put our passion and knowledge to good use helping owners of varying breeds and issues with their training needs. People are often unprepared for what is required to develop a well mannered, obedient pet, and even when you get everything right, circumstances beyond your control can give rise to challenges. For that reason we decided to learn to teach key skills that your dog should have, provide assistance and advice to enable you to correct any issues you are having and help your dogs become well mannered members of your family. Our focus is to show you, how, through changing your own behaviour and attitude towards your dog, your dogs behaviour and attitude towards you will be rewarding. Our aim is to offer you the skills to develop a well mannered, obedient and respectful dog. We have studied dog training and behaviour since the early 2000's and advanced and further developed our knowledge and skills training alongside Dog Trainer and behaviourist Robert Alleyne, undergoing his instructors course. We have attended dog to dog aggression, and dog to human aggression courses, with the CIDBT (Cambridge Institute of Dog Behaviour and Training) and trained with L*z Graham completing her accredited Pet Gundog Instructors programme with distinction in 2018. We have continued to further expand our knowledge in dog training and behaviour with both online and in person training courses and workshops with 'Training without conflict', 'Serious Dog Business', and 'STSK9'. We have also attended various workshops and seminars including Tellington Ttouch, Zoopharmacognosy, and canine first aid. We continue to train with a diverse number of trainers undertaking courses to further our knowledge and skills whenever possible. John is a level 4 certified True 2 Life International trainer, and a featured expert on the Ladies Working Dog Group .com

Claire is the author of the puppy book 'The Life of Rose' - Raising puppies the family dog services way, also, 'The Life of Rose' - becoming a gundog. Claire is a group expert, and trainer for the Ladies Working Dog Group

Sound sensitivity and pain.

A sudden or late-onset sound sensitivity can be an indicator of pain, so do check for underlying medical conditions and pain before beginning behaviour modification programmes

As fireworks season approaches we will be resharing our sound sensitivity educational posts and videos....

In both our gundog and behaviour work we have successfully helped 100s of dogs with sound sensitivity issues.

Over the next few days we will be talking about our experiences and protocols

If you have a dog who has suddenly developed sound sensitivities, start with a vet check or referral to a Canine Physiotherapist to rule out pain

If pain is ruled out and it's not a fear phase, we need to take a holistic approach to sound sensitivity

Topics will include...

How we can use play, to help change how the dog feels.

Eustress, as part of a behaviour modification programme to help build resilience in the anxious dog.

Medication, the pros and cons

Leadership and its benefits in helping sound sensitivity

Alternative therapies

Stay tuned...

Without a plan, it is easy to go off track, waste training time deciding what to train, or repeat exercises that are familiar and comfortable.

The key is to know your comfort point, the point where you and your dog excell, and beyond that is stretching the you and the dog. From that point progress is working on the areas that you and your dog need to work on, to progress and grow as a team.

Wherever that comfortable starting point is, that's your minimum criteria. In a reset 121 or zoom coaching call we can help you plan your training and help you make meaningful progress

Taking the time to consider you and your dogs strengths, abilities, and knowing areas to focus on is key to growth and progress.

Why is it important to plan your training sessions?

*Most of us don't have unlimited time, so wasting time deciding what to train is not productive

*Planned but flexible training sessions are more likely to be successful

*Unplanned and rigid training sessions are more likely go wrong or be rushed or stressful

*Unplanned training sessions are more likely to end up with you repeating exercises that you are comfortable with, rather than progressive exercises

Setting goals is important to ensuring growth. The training plan should be layered, structured, achieveable, and rewarding for you and the dog.

You may have a long-term goal but with planning, and structure there should be layered mini goals on that journey

Those mini goals help you stay on track and stay motivated

I mentioned flexible training earlier. Flexible training is important and means your plan can be changed to genuinely work with the dog in front of you, and your day to day life.

Once you have assessed where you are at in your training, and decided on your training goals, it becomes far easier to develop a training plan, to help you teach what you need to achieve those goals.

This is something we can help with, session planning, and structured exercises.

5 days post knee replacement surgery!

Thankyou so much for all the messages ❤️

The surgery went really well. I was so much braver than last time, only a few tears whilst the cannula was put into place just before they put the spinal epidural in to administer the nerve block and finally the sedation

I was back on the recovery ward by a little after 12pm. The pain was much worse this time when I was in the recovery ward as the nerve block wore off much more quickly this time, with me already experiencing the feeling returning in my lower body. I was there for a while whilst they were juggling a combination of pain meds to get me comfortable and getting the leg on ice.

They popped me on oxygen as I had low oxygen levels. I was back on my ward around 1.45pm

The surgery went really well, they managed to save the outside, the lateral part of my knee. So, I had another partial knee replacement, releaving the healthy parts intact, and replacing the medial (inside) part of the knee. The surgeon Mr Young, seemed very happy with the result.

I have staples this time, I had stitches with the first knee replacement.

I was home around 6.30pm

Pain medication routine at the moment Morphine at 6.30am, CoCodamol 10.30am, Morphine at 2.30pm, CoCodamol at 6.30pm, Morphine at 10.30pm and CoCodamol at 2.30am

Sadly I had a Lupus Flareup on Thursday.

I had first physio appointment today and they are pleased with my progress so far.

I managed 85 degree bend and she reckons when staples are out I'll achieve 90 degrees quickly

Leg extension really hurt but achieved the goal of 0 degrees of extension (completely flat and straight)

Got new exercises to start at home and back to the physio in 2 weeks time.

The right leg (newest, second knee replacement) is incredibly swollen, the whole leg is swollen

My left leg (first knee replacement) is also swollen, specifically the left hand side of knee and there is tightness and swelling just below knee to left, exactly where it feels incredibly tight. This could be due to over compensation, supporting the right leg, but could be arthritis, however, this very unlikely. Instructions to elevate and ice both legs lots
