Great to visit Vets for Pets Guernsey St Martins for a hands-on ultrasound CPD session delivered by Stefano Ludovici from VAIS (Veterinary Advanced Imaging Services).

Travelling by road and air made the journey to the island part of the adventure and Guernsey certainly did not disappoint. It was a fantastic session with an engaged team of vets and nurses, great discussion throughout and plenty of practical scanning time.

With a second CPD session already being discussed, VAIS is very much looking forward to returning soon.

What has stood out most is how access to in-practice advanced ultrasound has supported earlier decision making, helping teams manage cases confidently in-house and highlighting referral pathways clearly when they are truly needed.

VAIS Veterinary Advanced Imaging Services is now welcoming additional clinics interested in strengthening their in-house imaging capability or developing practical ultrasound confidence through hands on CPD.

If that sounds useful for your team, we'd be very happy to talk.

🩸BLOOD IN YOUR DOG’S URINE IS NEVER SOMETHING TO IGNORE.
It might be something simple like an infection…
but it can also be a sign of bladder stones or something more serious.

In this case, what started as a urinary issue led to an important early diagnosis and a life saving outcome.

The key?
👉 Acting early

At VAIS (Veterinary Advanced Imaging Services), we support practices with in-depth ultrasound imaging to help get answers quickly, keeping pets in the care of their own vet.

If you notice:
• Blood in urine
• Straining to urinate
• Changes in behaviour

Speak to your vet as soon as possible.

Early investigation means faster answers, better treatment options and the best possible outcome for your pet ❤️

💡A quick ultrasound reminder when assessing the urinary tract: don’t forget the urethra!

This case involved a 6-year-old neutered male Schnauzer presented for investigation of chronic UTIs. A subtle finding in the urethral region raised an important question about whether a structural change could be contributing to the patient’s clinical signs.

Sometimes the key to these cases lies in carefully following the urethra and assessing the lumen throughout its course.

Swipe through the scans and see what you think.

Question for colleagues:
Based on the images, would you consider this change likely to be clinically significant?

Always interested to hear how others approach these cases.

🧠 𝙐𝙡𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙨𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙 𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙜𝙚: 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙙𝙤 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙨𝙚𝙚?
A 10 year old male neutered Jack Russell Terrier was referred with chronic diarrhoea and previous ultrasound imaging from referring vet one week earlier was reported as unremarkable. Bloodwork showed neutrophilia as the only abnormality.

🔍 Not everything that looks like liver… is liver

When scanning the cranial abdomen, normal structures can sometimes mimic pathology. In this quick guide, Stefano Ludovici from VAIS shares a practical tip to help approach liver ultrasound more systematically and avoid a common interpretation trap, particularly in feline patients.
