Finding genuinely LOW FAT dog foods is a lot harder than it should be

Some foods LOOK low fat… until you calculate Dry Matter Basis 👀

So here are some foods that are ACTUALLY under 10% fat DMB to hopefully help other owners 💛

I made a huge mistake!

Nala has pancreatitis and has had a flare up this week. When you’re caring for a dog with pancreatitis or sensitive digestion, you try SOOOOO hard to do everything right!

I always thought “4% fat” automatically meant low fat.

But I learnt once moisture is removed and you calculate dry matter basis, the numbers can look completely different.

It is time to change Nalas food as turns out it is actually over 20% fat and due to her pancreatitis she needs 10% fat or less (on a dry matter basis).

To say I feel incredibly guilty is an understatement. I honestly thought I was on top of her dietary needs.

Sharing this because pet food labels are confusing and to show I’m always learning too 🫶

Please always speak to your vet regarding your dog’s individual dietary needs, especially with medical conditions such as pancreatitis.
