Here are 5 common mistakes I see dog owners make🐾
1. Dog’s thrive off structure and boundaries. If you give your dog responsibility for everything, they are going to struggle in certain situations and not understand what they can or can’t do. For example, giving full freedom to a puppy where they have the opportunity to steal and chew things you don’t want them to.
2. Dog training takes time, consistency and patience. It isn’t ever a quick fix as you want to teach the dog what to do and how to behave, generalizing the behaviour in different situations and environments. It also takes time to change their emotional response and behaviour. Don’t rush it!
3. It is so important to consider a variety of factors that can contribute to your dog’s behaviour. For example, your dog’s genetic needs, diet, health and wellbeing, physical and mental stimulation, rest, relationship etc. Changing your dog’s behaviour and training isn’t just about the behaviour you may see in front of you (Such as barking at other dogs), but so so much more.
4. Dog socialisation is all about building your dog’s confidence whilst also building neutrality and teaching them to co-exist, creating a good balance. It is also not just about exposure to dogs and people, but noises, objects, other animals etc.
5. You can’t expect your dog to perfect a solid heel or recall if you haven’t built the foundations. Building a clear communication system is so important, building on their engagement and motivation so they want to work with you and learn whilst making sure all their needs are met in other areas.
