Our mission is to prevent cruelty and suffering amongst animals in Greece, creating a more secure future for them through sustainable programmes and campaigns. Our core activities include neutering programmes for cats and dogs, a nation-wide equine welfare outreach project, providing assistance to local animal welfare organisations, emergency appeals for animals in need, public awareness raising campaigns, education projects for children of all ages, and lobbying and policy making in order to improve animal welfare legislation and its enforcement at a Greek and European level.

Our Equine Care Programme team recently returned to Hydra for this year’s outreach visit, providing veterinary, dental and farriery care to 58 working equines before the busy tourist season began.

The visit also included educational talks with local school children, helping inspire the next generation to care for animals with kindness and responsibility.

This photograph was taken in Santorini in the 1990s by our old equine team.

More than 30 years later, many of the same animal welfare issues still persist across Greece.

Working equines continue to suffer, stray animals still struggle to survive, and animal welfare groups remain under immense pressure to help those in need.

As we mark 60 years of helping animals in Greece, it is a stark reminder that our work is far from over. We cannot give up on the animals who still need us.

Please support our Next 60 Years Appeal and help us continue the fight for a better future for animals in Greece.

Prevention is one of the most important aspects of equine welfare, which is why we were pleased to support annual flu and tetanus vaccinations for the 21 equines in the care of ΕΣΠΙ-Ελληνικός Σύλλογος Προστασίας Ιπποειδών

Equine influenza is a highly contagious respiratory disease, while tetanus can be fatal if left untreated. Routine vaccinations help keep horses, donkeys and mules healthy, protected and able to enjoy a better quality of life.

A huge thank you to the team at ESPI for the dedicated care they provide every day. We are proud to support their work and the animals in their care. 💙

As part of our 60th anniversary celebrations, we've been looking back through some incredible memories from our history.

Recently, Anna got in touch and shared a report from a visit she and her husband Brian, an RSPCA (England & Wales) Inspector, made to the Greek island of Hydra in 1990. Back then, Animal Action Greece was known as the Greek Animal Welfare Fund (GAWF).

Reading through the report is a fascinating reminder of the dedication of the people who helped shape our charity over the years. During their visit, Anna and Brian provided veterinary care to working donkeys, mules, horses, dogs and cats, while working alongside local residents to improve animal welfare on the island.

More than three decades later, it's inspiring to look back at the foundations of the work that continues today.

As we celebrate 60 years of helping animals in Greece, we'd love to hear from others who have been part of our journey. Do you have any memories, photographs, newsletters, reports, fundraising materials or other pieces of Animal Action Greece (or Greek Animal Welfare Fund) history that you'd be willing to share? Let us know!

Whether feeding strays, trapping for neutering, fostering, fundraising, transporting animals, supporting adoptions, or caring for animals in need, thank you.

Animal welfare simply wouldn't be possible without your dedication, compassion and hard work. 💙🇬🇷 Please tag a dedicated volunteer who needs to hear this below! 👇

Last week, our Equine Care Programme team spent two days at Agia Marina Donkey Rescue, providing essential hoof and dental care to 32 rescued donkeys.

Farrier Vaios carefully cleaned and trimmed hooves, while Equine Dental Technician Alkis carried out dental examinations and treatments to help ensure the donkeys can eat comfortably and maintain good health.

Supporting sanctuaries and owners who dedicate their lives to caring for equines is an important part of our work, and we are always grateful for the opportunity to work alongside such committed people.

A huge thank you to everyone at Agia Marina Donkey Rescue for their hospitality and for the incredible work they do every day for donkeys in need.
