Getting a puppy? There’s so much you can put in place before those little paws even come through the door. 🐶

It’s much easier to build good foundations from the outset than to find yourself trying to change things further down the line.

That means thinking beyond what works for today. Will the routines, habits and choices you’re making now help you and your puppy tomorrow, next week and next month too?

Where will your puppy sleep? How will you manage toilet training, biting and those busy family moments? How will you introduce them to the world, help them feel safe and gradually build their confidence spending time alone?

It can feel quite daunting, especially when you ask one question online and get 20 different answers!

Support from a qualified, reward-based trainer can help you make sense of it all, with advice that considers both ends of the lead: your puppy’s needs, your family’s needs and how you’re going to enjoy life together.

My pre-puppy consultations give us time to talk through those decisions and put a practical plan in place before your puppy arrives.

I’m always encouraging you to notice your little wins with your dogs. Those little lightbulb moments, those times that make you want to punch the air with delight.

And this was one of mine. 🙌💚

Seven dogs. Seven handlers. Each dog watched as the course host threw their dummy into the same area, one at a time. We then walked the dogs away before taking turns to send them back for a memory retrieve.

Would they bring back their own dummy, or whichever one they found first?

Larry brought back his own! 👏

Was the delivery to hand perfect? No. But this was day two of our training holiday in rural Wales, in a completely new environment. I know how difficult it can be for Larry to stay focused somewhere new, with so much to take in.

He watched, marked the drop, walked nicely away, waited his turn and went back to complete the task. That meant far more to me than a polished finish.

For us, this was a big moment. ❤️

And that’s something I love about working with you and your dogs, too. Seeing those moments when your hard work starts to come together—and knowing just how much they mean to you.

A check-in on a walk. Coming back when called. Being able to settle. Those little wins deserve to be noticed and celebrated.

And I’m always there to punch the air with you!!💚

Over six weeks, we’ll build the foundations for everyday life together, including:

You’ll learn in a friendly, supportive outdoor environment, with small groups and individual help so you can put the training into practice with your own puppy.

A happy, fulfilled family dog starts with understanding the puppy in front of you 💚

🐶Meet Yoki, a gorgeous 14-week-old Sprocker, who started her one-to-one puppy training package with me this week!

🐾Her fabulous family have brought me in right at the beginning to help them navigate all things puppy and build strong foundations from the outset.

🥎They’re also keen to explore gundog training, so we introduced a very simple, playful puppy retrieve in our first session. Little beginnings, with plenty of time to learn at Yoki’s pace.

💙What I especially love is that her family are already thinking about how to meet her needs as a spaniel. Giving her opportunities to sniff, search, retrieve and use that busy little brain will be part of helping her grow into the happy, fulfilled family dog they’re hoping for. 🐶

Do you feel like you’re just about managing life with your dog, rather than enjoying the life together you’d always imagined?

I know how that feels. 💚

A year ago, Larry couldn’t have done this. Not here.

Walking beside me, off lead, in a field in rural Wales that he’d never been in before.

It might look like a simple moment, but knowing how far we’ve come, it means so much to me and I am literally bursting with pride!!!! 💖🙌

Historically, new environments and wide open spaces have been just too overwhelming for Larry—places where he struggles to cope and can’t make good decisions.

This trip to Wales felt like a turning point for us.
There are so many things I’m proud from this trip, but this quiet moment of connection captures our biggest win – Larry able to stay totally connected to me, despite everything going on around him - new highly scented environment, 6 other handlers and dogs that he’d never met before and lots of activity around him..

Gundog training has played an important part in helping us get here. The hunting games, retrieves and little bits of training we weave into our everyday walks have given us ways to work together, building our connection and my understanding of what he needs.

Even as a trainer, progress with my own dog takes time. There have been difficult days, adjustments and plenty of learning along the way—for both of us!

If you’re struggling to see light at the end of the tunnel, I hope our little moment gives you some hope.

Find something you both enjoy. Give yourselves time. Keep learning about the dog beside you—and give yourselves credit for the small steps along the way.

Oh and most importantly - enjoy the journey!!!! 💚
