We have reviewed the new Chickenguard Barn recycled plastic coop in our regular column with The Country Smallholder Magazine.

ChickenGuard have teamed up with us and The Country Smallholder to give UK residents the chance to win one of these innovative coops. The competition is open to UK residents and it closes on 24th August 2026.

Phew! I'm glad that's over. Our barn steading has 4 seperate barns, thankfully with only one that has render on it. Over time, mould formed on the paint, the paint peeled and some of the render cracked so I've been repairing and making it good as well as applying a mould treatment.

The painting phase is always really satisfying with very obvious results. I just need to re-gloss the doors and put some black bitumen paint on the lower course of bricks, and we're finished!

We breed Buff Orpingtons and we love that our hens incubate hatch and raise chicks for us.
However at this time of year, we feel it's too late to hatch chicks when they won't mature before mid winterso we break their brood.

There are 3 methods to break a brood, a fast, a slow and a midway. It's entirely up to you which method is suitable for you and your environment.

As this video explains, we're not fans of the slow method as it can compromise the condition and health of our hens. We also prefer to avoid the fast method, which does work extremely well, but it relies on our hens being uncomfortable. Our chosen route is the midway method. It mimics a natural scenario but has reliably broken the brood of our hens within 10 days.

That's how we approach it and what works for our hens, but you might find one of the other methods work for you much better. There are no wrong answers!

Hush now, it's bed time!

Tiny has moved her brood to the Nestera Lodge - she just prefers it. Do you think the chicks are happy?

The ducks had lettuce for the first time.

Do you think they liked it?

The ducks are four weeks old today so it's timd for a progress video.

Hatching ducks was a bit if an experiment for us but right now, we can safely say that we love the experience.
