As funny as it is when our dogs do things like this, it’s really important to ensure that they are getting enough sleep. Dogs need around 16 hours of sleep a a day and puppies need a whopping 18-20hrs of sleep per day. Getting enough sleep is crucial for our dogs emotional regulation, immune defence, hormone secretion, thermoregulation and metabolism. Lack of sleep can lead to learning impairment, stress, physiological and behavioural issues.

That’s why we are very strict about making sure our dogs get enough rest on daycare days. After our big walk, we have designated down time where the dogs can choose to sleep wherever they want whether that’s on comfy sofas, soft dog beds, cosy crates or even the floor in Otis’ case!

In a daycare setting where the dogs get to hang out with their friends for hours, it’s very easy for them to become overstimulated. By having our designated down time, the dogs learn to relax in the presence of other dogs which is a much needed skill for any sociable dog- it’s not just all about the play!

So when researching care options for your dog make sure you factor in sleep! Ask questions- do they have a set up for dogs to sleep, how is sleep encouraged, how does the current group get along during nap time dynamics. These are all things to consider to ensure your pet is getting the best care for them.

Is your dog struggling to sleep, drop me a message and let’s have a chat!

Hey, I’m really glad you’re here! Welcome to my little corner of instagram…

My name is Lilly, and I’ve spent the past 6 years dedicating my life to dogs, learning as much as I can in order to help them live their best lives!

My work includes supporting both ends of the lead. For the dogs that means making sure they feel safe, understood and fulfilled while making sure their needs are met. For the humans it means reassurance, empathy and support.

Whether you’re looking for a compassionate trainer or a walker who will ensure your pup gets the very best, I can help.

Save this post for later or drop me a DM to find out more!

This is what turns your walk into real enrichment…

Foraging breaks!

When dogs forage, they engage in intense, rapid sniffing, problem solving and processing huge amounts of scent at a time. This process is mentally demanding and taps into areas of the brain linked to focus, learning and satisfaction as well as their natural instincts.

All you need is a handful of treats/ their regular food, a patch of grass or leaves and 5 mins of your regular walk.

The result… a satisfied, settled post walk pup!

As a dog walker, it’s extremely important to be able to read dog body language effectively so you know when play is appropriate and when it needs to be broken up.

In this video, we have two young labradors both full of energy. The yellow lab (Honey) is having a great time doing zoomie laps of the field when the black lab (Ollie) tries to initiate some wrestling by running directly into her path. Not the politest way to engage but he is younger, more boisterous and has some learning to do!

Honey attempts to tell Ollie she’s not up for playing right now and tries to head in the other direction, Ollie however immediately follows her. Honey escalates by using her body to create space. Ollie misinterprets this as an invitation to more wrestling, it’s only when honey freezes and puts her hackles up that Ollie got the message that ā€˜Oh Honey doesn’t want to play right now’.

On the surface it looks like play but this is a classic example of ā€˜play’ not being play and it’s exactly these scenarios that will often end in the phrase ā€˜well that came out of nowhere’. When in reality there were plenty of signs that this needed to be broken up which it was as both dogs were immediately recalled.

This is one of the many reasons it’s important vet the people that care for your dogs and make sure they can read the subtle signs to ensure your dogs comfort and safety. As repeated scenarios like these if not interrupted can lead to bigger problems for dogs on both sides.

Every pet parent MUST watch this video!

AI may be creeping into all aspects of human life but we shouldn’t let that affect our dogs. As demonstrated here, AI does not have the ability to accurately read dog body language. So when confronting a challenge with our dog whether that’s recall or something more complex like fear around other dogs or people, there is a strong likelihood it will make the situation worse.

So this is your reminder to ALWAYS seek the help of an accredited professional when it comes to your dog.

I ditched the bowl for kibble years ago and here’s why…

As a canine professional and dog mum to an energetic poodle, my life is busy and sometimes I need to be a little bit lazy.

Dogs were designed to forage, problem solve and move while they eat, not inhale their food in 10 seconds flat.

By switching over to food dispensing toys like the bob-a-lot toy in the video, snuffle mats, simple food games or even just the grass in your garden, you allow your dog to tap into their natural instincts and burn some mental energy just by giving them a meal!

While you get to relax on the sofa with a cup of tea for 5 mins.

It takes me no extra time,
my dog eats slower and enjoys it,
and they’re calmer and more fulfilled afterwards.

Same kibble.
Less effort for me.
More benefit for my dog.

It’s a win-win! ✨

Also shoutout to for Kevin’s stunning collar- still in love šŸ˜
