Let’s talk netting in vegetable beds. IT’S A POTENTIAL KILLER! ☠️☠️

We have just rescued a hedgehog who became entangled in netting, luckily he was only there for a few hours. The more a hedgehog struggles the worse the entanglement becomes.

PLEASE: Either make sure it’s at least 30cm above the soil so hedgehogs can pass underneath OR make sure it’s properly secured to the soil so it’s a proper barrier that hogs can’t pass through. And check it often.

IF YOU FIND AN ENTANGLED HEDGEHOG after removing from the netting please don’t let it go as it may have significant injuries that you can’t see. Contact [email protected]

A big thank you to the volunteers who helped out at the Boston Manor Nature Festival this weekend! Lara, Gertie, Teresa, Dorothy, Cris, you are all stars!
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

We're always looking for volunteers to help out with the education side of what we do. Engaging members of the public, especially children is such a fun thing to do. If we can protect hedgehogs more, and support them in our gardens, we will have less sick and injuried hedgehog casualties 🌷

Lara, thanks for the little pompom hedgehogs🙏🏻Thank you to Cath for our wonderful mascot who got everyone talking. The name chosen for Saturday was... PRICKLE ! 🦔🦔

HENRY IS BACK TO THE WILD!

THE FOLLOWING ACCOUNT IS FROM OUR TRAINED VOLUNTEER, ANIA.

Little Henry was found during the day in a local garden in Hanwell. The owner contacted us, and the hog was checked over. He was very docile and easy to examine, but other than that we could not find anything wrong with him.
As he was found on the day when it hailed (in May!), we thought that perhaps the unusual spell of weather had woken him from his sleep. Therefore, after initial examination, we released him that night. Unfortunately, the same thing happened again the next day. This time, we decided to take him in and, in the absence of any obvious injuries, we sent a poo sample to a wildlife hospital for analysis.

The results revealed the presence of parasites, and our brilliant Greenwood Vet was able to prescribe medication. It took a few days of fostering before Henry started to gain weight, but after five days in our care he was ready to be released back into the same garden where he had been found.

Here he is, taking his first steps back to freedom. The bucket filled with strips of newspaper seen in the background was his temporary bed while he stayed in one of our cages.
Happy wandering, Henry!

LITTLE LIGHTWELL IS MUCH BETTER NOW

Remember our hedgehog boy Lightwell who had fallen into a light well and was trapped for days? We found him with a wound on his hip and a damaged back leg, and he was utterly dehydrated and full of fly eggs. We saved him just on time.
Good news: after a week of antibiotics and painkillers - and a lot of TLC from us - he got the "all clear" from the our amazing team at the Greenwood Veterinary Clinic.

STILL SOME TIME UNTIL RELEASE

As he had rubbed off his front claws when trying to climb out, he has to be with us for another few weeks. And he needs lungworm treatment. After that he will be so pleased to be back in the wild.

We also worked with the owner of the light well - they are securing it, so that this can't happen again.

ACCIDENT PREVENTION IN YOUR GARDEN

* Cover all drains or open holes. Hedgehogs have a tendency to fall in (their eye sight is not great)
* Secure light wells (of basement flats) - use sheets of clear perspex around the well fences (not netting - hedgehogs get caught in that as well)
* Create exit ramps out of your pond
* Hang all netting a foot above the ground - that includes football goals
* Remove any litter promptly

Big Thank you to Protected Paws animal rescue,

They donated seven cat carriers and a huge bag of food to our hedgehogs. A special thank you to their volunteer Sam, who offered and coordinated. And to our volunteer Christine, who went on a long evening drive to pick everything up.

As you can see, our hedgehogs need secure transport. This one just came from the vet, and really wanted to get out!

We've had a great response to our 'Out in the day is not OK' campaign. A big thank you goes out to all of our lovely volunteers who covered Ealing in our posters.

Our message is a simple, but very important one - reacting to a hedgehog out in the day is really, really key. There is, however, one exception to the 'Out in the day' message. This relates to foraging mother hedgehogs. These are hedgehogs that move with purpose, usually collecting food and nesting materials.

Our message is still simply 'Out in the day is not OK' because we haven't, in the three years we have been doing this work, picked up a foraging mum. We have, however, had dozens and dozens of unwell hedgehogs that had been left out in the day often for days on end. This results, often, in unnecessary suffering for these animals (e.g. broken, infected and painful limbs, severe dehydration and flystrike which, of course, is a killer if not treated quickly.) More often than we would wish, these situations lead to the hedgehog being put to sleep by one of the vets we work with.

The important thing to know is that our simple message is backed up by a team of trained volunteers. When we get a message to our help line our team is very aware of this issue and immediately check as to whether it might be a foraging mum. Also as soon as a hog comes in, we immediately check for gender and teats, so if there is any doubt, and the hog can be released, we would release it. If it is too ill to release, we would go and find the hoglets.
