Post-Operative Care — Why Do We Do It? 🩺💙

Once your pet has had surgery, our job doesn’t stop when the procedure is finished. In fact, the recovery period is just as important! 🐶🐱

While your pet is still with us at the clinic, we carry out regular checks to make sure they are recovering as expected — and if something isn’t quite right, we can identify it early and take action. ❤️‍🩹

🔎 What do we check?

❤️ Vital signs — including heart rate, respiratory rate and body temperature.

🩹 The surgical wound — we check that the incision is healing well and look for any signs of swelling, infection or wound breakdown.

💊 Pain levels — one of the most important parts of post-operative care is making sure your pet is comfortable and not showing signs of pain.

🍽️ Eating and drinking — we make sure they are recovering well enough to eat and drink before going home.

🐾 Movement and mobility — we also assess how comfortably they are moving around before their discharge appointment.

⏰ Post-operative care can take time, and we are always more than happy to stay with your pet for as long as needed to make sure they are comfortable, settled and ready to go home.

And there are some lovely benefits to this extra time too! 🥰 It gives us the chance to get to know your pet, build their trust and help make their experience with us as positive as possible.

Just look at Winston here! 🐶💙 Even after his surgery, he was more than happy to accept some cuddles from the vet. 🥰🫶

🔍 Helping us see what’s going on beneath the surface

Sometimes, your pet’s symptoms don’t tell the whole story. That’s where diagnostic imaging can help. 🐾

At our veterinary practice, we offer ultrasound and X-rays to help identify illnesses, injuries and other conditions quickly and accurately. With results available promptly, our team can create the right treatment plan to help your pet get back to feeling their best. ❤️

🦷 We also offer dental X-rays, which can reveal hidden problems beneath the gum line that aren’t visible during a routine dental examination.

From unexplained symptoms to dental concerns, our advanced diagnostic tools help us get a clearer picture of your pet’s health.

📅 If your pet needs a closer look, get in touch with our team to book an appointment.

☀️ The heat is on – and so is the risk for our furry friends! 🐶🐱

As temperatures rise, it’s vital to keep your pets cool, safe, and hydrated. Brachycephalic (flat-faced) breeds like Frenchies, Pugs & Persians are especially vulnerable to heatstroke, so avoid walks in peak heat and always provide shade and fresh water.

🚫 Please do not use Perspex carriers in hot weather - they trap heat and reduce airflow, putting your pet at serious risk.

✅ Choose well-ventilated carriers, walk early or late, and never leave pets in parked cars.

Let’s keep them cool and comfortable this summer! 💧🐾

At Paws in the City, we work closely with specialists and can provide referrals when needed.

Lily was recently assessed, and after surgery with the Royal Veterinary College, we discussed treatment options with her owner - including conservative management with pain relief and physiotherapy.

Your pet’s care is our priority and when advanced treatment is needed, we’ll guide you every step of the way. 💛
