🦔 FOUND A DISTURBED HEDGEHOG NEST? 🐾

STOP! READ THIS FIRST.

We've entered baby season, and accidentally disturbing a nest happens!

What you do next can save lives:

✅ DO:

🦔 Cover it back up immediately with the same materials. Leave it exactly as you found it.

🐾 Back away quietly. Mum may return once she feels safe.

🦔 Keep pets & children away from the area for at least 24 hours.

☎️ Ring us and provide the exact details of what has happened we will advise you of the best next steps depending on the circumstances.

07557646773

❌ DON’T:

🙌 Touch or move the babies. Your scent can cause mum to abandon them.

🍼Try to feed them. Cow’s milk is fatal to hedgehogs.

🦔 Don't kill them with kindness, a rescue has knowledge, equipment and time to give them the best start in life.

WARNING ⚠️

🐾🙌 Any hedgehog LYING out in the day, whether a Hoglet or Adult needs rescuing.

When in doubt, call your local hedgehog rescue before intervening, note many rescues across the UK are small and at this time of year under pressure, we can provide advice until as such time a rescue close can admit if this is the best route for the hedgehog.

Wee Daisy came in from Dunbar yesterday. She has some old strimmer related damage to back of her neck but it was her breathing which was more concerning.

She was really struggling to breath and you could see there was some structural issues to her face/nose. As hedgehogs are not mouth breathers, they struggle if their nasal cavities are obstructed.

I took her to the vets this morning and sadly she was euthanised. Vets suspect some type of tumour or infection that was causing irreversible damage to her nasal passages and she would not survive in the wild

RIP Daisy

Late night admission for Cedar, victim of an enthusiastic dog but early signs are reassuring in that there are no visible puncture wounds and he is getting tucked into his food after a bath.

Reggie’s release was on STV news this evening - so rewarding to see these wee guys going back to the wild ❤️

Never empty for long - since Reggie’s release we have welcomed 3 hedgehogs: Zayne, Acer and Bracken.

Unfortunately Zayne didn’t make it but Acer is responding really well to treatment.

Bracken was found in Bonnyrigg, out in the day and handed into the vets who kindly contacted me. He seems well but will keep an eye on him for 1-2 days before setting him free if samples are clear

No time for Sunday rest!
Zayne had a nebuliser session this morning which will hopefully help with his very crackly chest.
Acer (aka Chris) had a much needed bubble bath (look at colour of the water!) and then enjoyed some breakfast.

2 releases & 2 admissions! Busy day for the rescue

Poor Zayne has some breathing issues so has been popped into the nebuliser.

Next newbie brings us back to A - need to think of a theme for naming the next 26 admissions. Any ideas?

Rest in peace Yacob!

Considering his age and the awful flat shutdown state he was in when admitted, he did well to last the week.

Judging by his large battered ears and war wounds, he has had a full and eventful life.

He has enjoyed his grub and heat mat over the last week which gives me some comfort.
