Alfie was recommended physio by his vet after fracturing his pelvis in April after being hit be a car. He had a lot of muscle wastage following the necessary confinement required to let the fracture heal. Cats can be difficult to carry out physio on as they often won’t stay still. Alfie was a perfect patient and tolerated my handling allowing me to use my electro therapies and perform range of motion on his joints. His dedicated owners could get him to perform the recommended exercises as he was food motivated which built up his muscles so he could safely return to a normal lifestyle.

It was lovely to hear this morning that this young Catalan, who I saw last week, had won the AVNSC class and come 4th in another large class at the weekend. Physio can help young dogs move and develop symmetrically which can help prevent both behavioural and physical issues which may develop as they mature.

This is Pip a sensitive 3 year old labrador who was very anxious when I first saw her as seen in the first video. Two months before her behaviour had changed, she didn't want to go up single steps in the house particularly when carrying something in her mouth, she would put the item down back up the step and then pick it up again. She had a fear of the tiled floor in the kitchen and wouldn't go into the living room.

During the physio session I found she had restrictive musculature on her HLs but also on her L shoulder, she had very limited flexion of her head and neck to the L too. Once these had been addressed she was more comfortable. Her lovely owner was talked through the recommendations including some simple exercises. The second video was taken at the start of the second session. Her owner had diligently carried out the recommendations and Pip was much happier, more relaxed and calmer. She was going into the living room of her own accord and would walk on the tiled floor as well as the mats. Her owner was delighted and Pip has continued to progress well.

An animal's behaviour is linked to how their body feels and how easy it is for them to move. Pip's owner was recommended physio by Beastly Thoughts Professional Dog Services who recognise this and realise that a dog must be comfortable in order to get the most benefit from training. They often recommend physio especially for their reactive dogs.

I also work closely with Leads To Success Personal Dog Training and The K9 Personal Trainer. They are all very good at addressing behavioural and training issues.

I was very proud to have been the Cheshire endurance group team vet physio for the inter regional competition this weekend. The team worked brilliantly together keeping riders and horses comfortable. Everyone did well but John and Scarlet excelled! They had a great ride vetted quickly and looked fantastic all day! Well done Team North West!

In a rare and remarkable feat, two brother horsesβ€”CA Jalmeer ("Jam") and CA Jalwizard ("Merlin")β€”both owned and trained by John Black, swept top honours in their respective 80km Competitive Endurance Ride (CER) classes. Their combined success also helped propel Team North West to a brilliant second-place finish in the Inter-Regional Championships.

On the left of the winning lineup was rising star Scarlet Chapple riding the loaned Merlin to a spectacular victory, taking 1st place in the Young Rider 80km CER . Stepping in as a wildcard entry for Team North West, the new combination gelled instantly, demonstrating a beautiful connection and tactical pacing over the challenging Gloucestershire countryside.

Securing the sibling double-win, owner-trainer John Black rode Merlin’s 18-year-old brother, Jam, to 1st place in the Veteran Horse 80km CER. This marked a historic milestone for Jam, representing his 25th successful 80km completion. Over his illustrious career, Jam has successfully clocked more than 4,200 competitive kilometres, including eight rides of 100km or more.

In addition to their shared lineage, both Merlin and Jam share another remarkable trait: they have lived out 24/7 and competed completely barefoot their entire lives. Their superb soundness and high-level performance over a grueling 80km distance stands as a shining testament to the success of natural horse management and barefoot conditioning in endurance sport.

Please join us in giving a massive round of applause to Scarlet, John, Merlin, Jam, and the whole North West squad in the comments! πŸ‘πŸ‘‡

On Thursday I went back to the University of Nottingham vet school for a day of learning organised by IRVAP. Lectures on locomotion, spinal pathologies and fascia and how they relate to the vet physio were covered. We then spent several hours in the dissection lab discussing and exploring the structures beneath the skin of animals. It was an interesting and informative day and a great opportunity to exchange ideas with other vet physios.

Thanks to Demi k9 personal trainer for sharing this link with me. It shows how much movement of the horses back there is when trotting and cantering. Physio can help keep the horses backs muscles working well.
