🐟 Why are my koi fish jumping?
If you’ve noticed your koi suddenly jumping out of the water, there could be a few different reasons:
Poor water quality
Ammonia, nitrite or other water quality issues can irritate your koi and cause unusual behaviour. Always test your water if jumping starts suddenly.
Changes in water temperature
Sudden temperature changes can stress koi and affect their behaviour.
Low oxygen levels
Warm weather, overcrowding or poor water movement can reduce oxygen levels, causing koi to become unsettled.
Parasites or irritation
Parasites can irritate the skin and gills, sometimes causing koi to jump, flash or rub against surfaces.
Feeding behaviour
Sometimes jumping is simply excitement around feeding time, especially if your koi have learned that you bring food!
Stress or something has changed
New fish, changes to the pond, predators, loud disturbances or other environmental changes can all cause stress.
If the jumping is frequent or unusual, don’t ignore it. Check your water parameters first and look for any other signs of irritation or illness.
A little observation can tell you a lot about what your koi are trying to tell you.
