🐾Sheldon🐾

I recently visited the lovely Sheldon (Tortoise) for his nail clip! This little guy is very special as he goes into work at a school with his mum as a pet therapy tortoise! 🥰🥰🥰

🪰 Flystrike: a serious summer risk for rabbits & guinea pigs 🐰🐹

Flystrike happens when flies lay eggs on your pet, often around the back end. The eggs can hatch into maggots, which can quickly cause severe tissue damage and can be life-threatening.

☀️ Help reduce the risk:
• Check your pet’s bottom every day, especially during warm weather.
• Keep bedding and living areas clean and dry.
• Make sure your pet has a healthy diet with plenty of high-quality hay and appropriate fresh food.
• Monitor for diarrhoea, soft stools, obesity, reduced mobility or any illness that could make it difficult for them to keep themselves clean.
• Groom long-haired pets regularly and keep the fur around the back end clean and dry.
• Ask your vet about flystrike prevention products and whether they are suitable for your pet.

🚨 Important: If you see maggots, fly eggs, a strong smell, wounds or your pet seems unwell, contact a vet immediately. Flystrike can progress very quickly and needs urgent treatment.

❤️ A few minutes of daily checking could help save a life.

☀️ Cats can often be found relaxing in the warmth of the sunshine, but any cat can be at risk of sunburn. Cats with white, thin or no hair are at higher risk. Repeated sun exposure can lead to sore and damaged skin, which in turn could lead to skin cancer.

Here are our tips if you want to use sunscreen to protect your cat:

🐾 When applying sunscreen, use gentle Cat Friendly handling paired with positive reinforcement - don’t force your cat into the interaction.

🧴 Only use sunscreen that is specifically for pets. If you are using a new product, monitor your cat for any reactions.

🐱 Focus on applying it to their nose, tips of ears, belly and groin areas, along with anywhere that has thin or no fur.

🪶 After applying, distract your cat with a treat or play to allow the product to be absorbed without being licked and groomed away.

🏡 If you would prefer not to put anything on your cat, restricting their access outdoors during the hottest part of the day may be necessary.

🏥 Contact your vet team if your cat is showing any signs of sunburn or skin cancer, or if you would like advice on sun protection for your cat.
