If you’ve worked with a dog trainer before but you didn’t see change, you might have been missing some of these vital things.

Stress Management
Sleep
Pain Management
Dog Time
A plan for when it goes wrong

Successful behaviour change doesn't just happen when we teach our dog new skills. We have to look at the whole dog in order to help them.

Good training will take a holistic approach, taking intouch account all of the above before the training begins.

A friendly reminder for anyone who’s feeling overwhelmed with caring for their dog...

Your dog doesn't need you to be perfect!
Not every walk has to be the world’s best training session or the calmest, most enriching sniffy walk possible.

Getting things ‘wrong’ is an important part of the learning process. And the best bit? Your dog has absolutely no idea that you didn’t stick to your plan.

Doing the best you can with the resources available to you is absolutely enough.

Last week we said goodbye to Rach’s wonderful Labrador Bob.

Bob was an incredibly gentle soul, and over the years he became my trusty side kick helping so many dogs build their confidence. He was excellent at helping puppies learn how to say hi, teaching the giddy teenagers to peacefully co-exist with other dogs, and helping worried dogs feel confident enough to go in for that first sniff.

We have so much to thank him for, and I'm so grateful that I got to learn so much from this very very special lad 🌈

What do you do if you see someone struggling with their dog?

Maybe they're pulling on lead, maybe they're barking, lunging or their owner is trying to move them away. What can you do to be helpful?

Give them space!
Even if it means temporarily diverting your walk route. If you can see someone’s dog is having a hard time, the most helpful thing you can do is give them some space. Don’t keep walking directly at them

Let them know which way you're going if you can
If you really do need to get past, this can help them create the right amount of space for their dog. Make sure to give them time to move this isn’t always easy if the dog is mid reaction.

Resist the temptation to give advice
Even if you have the best intention in the world, no one responds well to unsolicited advice and it’s rarely helpful in the moment. They may already have a plan, they may have even been attempting to do what you were going to suggest. Just because it worked for your dog, doesn’t mean it will work for them

Be Kind
People are always doing the best they can with the information they have at the time. No it’s not ideal if their dog barked and lunged at you, but a bit of kindness goes a long way when people are already having a hard time.

Are you ready for another of our fabulous Spicy Socials?

These events are designed to help create a community of people who live and work with dogs with a little extra 'spice'!

While lots of people who come along have dogs who have big responses to the world around them, this is open to anyone who's working through training with their dog, has a dog with complex needs, or maybe even just loves talking about dogs! Owners, trainers and other dog professionals are all welcome.

This time, we'll be kicking off with a talk from me, Lauren, owner, head trainer, and reactivity specialist at Focus Dig Training. I'll be talking about what we do when our training session or dog walk goes wrong!

Come and join us on Tuesday 15th September, 6-8pm at the Brownlee Arms in Horsforth.

Link to book is in the comments!

Let me deinfluence you about your dogs behaviour...

It’s normal for your dog not to want to greet every dog they see.
The majority of adult dogs are selective about the dogs they want to meet or interact with. Dogs have social preferences just like us.

Dogs can bark at things without being labelled as ‘reactive’
Dogs are not robots. They’re sentient beings who react to the world around them. Sometimes they get excited, startled, worried, or caught off guard.

Not every dog is going to enjoy being a pub dog
Yes we can teach dogs the skills to settle in busy places, but just because we can, doesn’t mean we should. Lots of the dogs I see in these places are not having a great time!
