🐾 "My dog is a tool!!" 🐾.
As a trainer, this is something I hear daily:
"She is wired today!"
"He is on one today!"
"She’s too excited to listen!"…….
Top secret:
They aren't actually being naughty. They are feeding off your energy and are unsure of what is expected of them..We all carry a level of baggage with us daily. Depending on how you as a handler are feeling, your dog will, without fail pick up on it. They see it. They smell it! .
How to deal with it:
There are things you can do, but the most important first step is to take a few slow, deep breaths. This simple action immediately relaxes your posture and reassures your dog that everything is okay.
We can also work on calming circles. Yes, believe it or not, this exercise relaxes us just as much as it relaxes the dog! It forces a reset, brings the focus back to a quiet rhythm, and grounds you both as a team..
Once you have achieved that focus, stay calm and use clear commands in a gentle manner. No shouting. No repeating. .
By doing this, you are reinforcing the fact that everything is okay and there is absolutely no need for them to be on high alert..
Above all, try to enjoy the time with your dog. Let that relationship be your escape from daily worries or stresses. Admittedly, there will be some days when this just won’t be possible, on those days, don’t expect miracles from your dog.
More often than not, they will be perfectly happy to just sit and relax with you. .
Let’s be honest, their sometimes quirky behaviour makes us smile every day. Guaranteed, your dog will restore your peace, your smile, and your focus if you just give them the chance. .
Next time you feel your dog spinning out of control, slow down, breathe, and reset together. 🐾😍
