Meet Stanley

Stanley started hydrotherapy with us for IVDE (Intervertebral Disc Extrusion).
He has made fantastic progress with Louise and has settled in well.

For Stanley it is crucial that we build up muscle mass and stabilise him to give him support with his condition. Hydrotherapy will help him maintain strength, stability, and improve mobility and muscle mass.

He is a lovely boy and really enjoys his liver paste treat which keeps him motivated. I mean who could say no with these puppy dog eyes.

We're super proud of how far he has come and settled with us.

Facts Friday

Did you know?

Dogs can be right or left pawed.
They can have a more dominant paw like humans with their hands.

You could test this on your own dog but observing which paw they lead with after being in a stand position. Do this a few times to see if they favour one side more than the other.

Muscle Monday

This week's muscle is Longissimus dorsi.

This muscle has attachments to the cervical spine, from between the withers to the lower back. This then connects to fascia that continues on to the middle gluteal muscle. This is the biggest and longest muscle of the spine.

Action
The Longissimus dorsi lifts the head and neck. Lateral flexion of the trunk and neck. Extends the back and loins. It aids lateral flexion and is part of the group of muscles that aid propulsion.

Dysfunction

- Can cause stiff vertebrae
- Restricted lateral flexion of the body
- Stiff back

Shout out Saturday

Meet Rufus.

Rufus has just had his 6th session with Louise for Hind limb weakness. He absolutely smashed today's session 💦🌊

I'm so incredibly proud of how far Rufus has come on his first session he was nervous of coming into the hydrotherapy room that he now waltz in with no issues.
He has built up his confidence with the treadmill so much. Rufus and I have now built an incredible bond that he is happy and knows he is secure to do his hydro treatment. That and his treats which consists of blueberries 🫐 and sausages.

Muscle Monday

Latissimus dorsi

Is sometimes described as the broadest muscle of the back.
It's a triangler shape and starts at the back of the withers and along the spine and the lower back. Here it connects onto a sheets of fascia (lumbar aponeurosis) which continues over the loins and into the gluteals. The lower part attaches to the back of the humerus under the shoulder joint.
The action of the latissimus dorsi is to draw the shoulder blade down and retracts. It's crucial for retraction and pulling actions.
Also supporting the spine in movement especially during high speed activities.

This muscle works heavily on dogs that
- jump, run and pull (canicross, agility, fly all)
- climbing up stairs/ramps etc
- turning suddenly during play or stopping.

Dysfunction signs can include
- reduced reach
- forelimb lameness
- discomfort with going up and down stairs
- posture can look 'tucked up' or reluctant to stretch
- tension through ribs and lower back.

Happy Friday everyone, we hope you're all staying cool in this heat. It is potentially getting hotter over the weekend/next week.
Please please do not walk your dogs in the heat. Please test the floor before taking them out. If your foot or back of your hand cannot last 5 seconds on the asphalt then it is far too hot for paws.
Walk in the shade if needed for a quick toilet break and preferably grass not artificial grass.

For walks either very early in the morning or the evening is best. But they will not die from a missed walk in this heat. Provide fresh water and cool/shady places to rest. You can use cool mats if needed but please do not place a damp towel over your dog as this can cause them to heat up as the heat evaporates from your dog it gets trapped in the towel. They're better off lying on a damp towel.

Make sure bunnies and guinea pigs are not in direct sunlight and consider bringing them in doors somewhere cool away from the heat outside.
Remember to enjoy summer but take steps to protect all pets.
