📣 BLUETONGUE UPDATE📣

As you will have probably seen there has now been a confirmed case of Bluetongue in Aberdeenshire.

Vaccination remains the best way to protect your livestock from the effect of BTV-3. If you would like to order vaccine, or discuss vaccination protocol with a vet please get in touch with us at the practice.

The situation is rapidly evolving - for latest updates on cases, restrictions and movement licenses, please see: https://www.gov.scot/publications/bluetongue/pages/latest-situation/?fbclid=IwY2xjawUosWJleHRuA2FlbQIxMABwZG9mAWJyaWQRMFpGU2JDNk9oS1pHYnIwb2xzcnRjBmFwcF9pZBAyMjIwMzkxNzg4MjAwODkyAAEeyULKxEghB5FP7-TX1Lc5STGFYykaM8R06cPPEd9lreiQurGcGidw8ALcc8U_aem_y44BLYDmN5DIW6j8blKUtg

👋 Meet the Team 👋

This month we are introducing Mark Pellissier, who is one of our Senior Vets. Mark has been with us for 3 years and has been qualified for 29 years!

What is your favourite part of farm practice?

My favourite part of farm practice is driving out to farms with the sun on the hills, a successful caesar with a live calf or lamb and a nice cup of coffee afterwards.

🐾Happy International Dog Day! 🐾

Today we're celebrating the hardworking farm dogs who are there through every season. From gathering sheep on the hill to moving cattle, keeping watch around the yard, and never being too far from the truck, they're an invaluable part of the team.

Their loyalty, intelligence and work ethic make life on the farm that little bit easier, and they're always ready for the next job (or a well-earned biscuit!).

Here's to all the four-legged farm hands keeping Scotland's farms moving. We'd love to see yours - share a photo in the comments! 🐶❤️

‼️Scotland has had its first confirmed case of Bluetongue Virus (BTV-3).‼️

Currently there are 289 confirmed cases across the UK, including one in Scotland.

A few important points to remember:
• 1 confirmed “case” means 1 affected holding, NOT one individual animal.
• Due to test turnaround times, confirmed figures reflect clinical disease seen approximately 1–2 weeks ago.
• Case numbers are expected to continue to rise, as we have not yet reached peak vector season.
• BTV-3 is the only strain isolated in the current outbreak so far.

If you suspect any of your animals have Bluetongue please contact us and we will guide you through the appropriate reporting, testing and treatment.

Reporting and testing are vital for the surveillance and control of this notifiable disease, while early treatment gives affected animals the best chance of individual recovery.

It is also important to remember that affected or in-contact animals are NOT culled to control Bluetongue, although euthanasia may be indicated on welfare grounds.

In the coming weeks, please get in touch if you have any queries or concerns. We understand that this is a worrying time and it is ever changing but we are here to help and assist.

👋 Meet the Team 👋

This month we’re introducing Bruce Armstrong, who is one of Vets and has been with us for 4 years and qualified in 1981.

Their favourite part of farm practice?

Bruce's favourite part of farm practice is arriving on farm for a caesar (cow or sheep) and being met with a clean, not too hot, not too cold bucket of crystal clear water....2 more on the boil, a couple of helpers, plenty lights, a farm collie and everyone in a good mood. A snack doesn't go amiss.
