Sarah Logie FWCF. Somewhere to share what Ive been upto and to share some ideas and pics! As well as increase her referral work.

Sarah Logie FWCFSarah served her apprenticeship in the Scottish highlands with Robin Pape and made history in 2006 by being the first ever female to qualify with honours.During the following summer she worked in the USA on the exchange program as a chosen representative of the UK farriery industry. Upon returning home to Scotland she spent time working with specialist farriers in Britain and then

went on to work in New Zealand over the winter. In 2007 she set up S. Logie Farriery whilst continuing to work alongside Robin as part of Farley Forge.Furthering her studies she went on to sit the Associate exam in 2012, passing with Distinction. As a result of seeing an increase in environmental related foot infections particularly seedy toe she embarked upon the Fellowship exam with a thesis looking at the treatment of structural seedy toe by medication and filling. She successfully passed the exam in May 2017 and became one of only two women to hold the qualification. There are less than 50 โ€˜Fellowsโ€™ worldwide and is the highest recognised qualification within the profession.Sarah is using her qualification to help educate other farriers and support them as they work towards their higher exams through the 'Farriery tuition' service. Improving performance within the equine athlete is an area she particularly enjoys.

WEIGHT LOSS FOR YOUR HORSE OR PONY, PUT SIMPLY...

If your horse is too f*t, you need to find a way to cut energy (calorie) intake (and/or increase energy output via exercise).

(F*t to get over FB algorithms, which limit views if I use the regular term for adipose tissue!)

Slimming down really is as simple as this (in theory - I'm not saying its easy in practice).

But if the horse takes in less energy than they need, they will use up adipose stores and slim down.

!! It's not all about sugar intake !!

Some high calorie feeds are high in sugar e.g. grass and some hay, but many high calorie feeds are not particularly high in sugar e.g. high fat and highly digestible fibre feeds - so it is an error to assume high calorie is high sugar!

Yes, if our horse or pony has EMS or hyperinsulinaemia-associated laminitis (HAL) then we will also need to control their sugar, forage fructan and starch intake very carefully, but this does not always mean their diet ends up low enough in calories for the necessary weight loss.

As I mentioned above, of course the theory is simple, but it is not so easy to implement, in real life.

Practically, we need to look at the whole diet - forage (grass, hay, haylage) and bucket feed - and cut calories whilst fulfilling behavioural and digestive health needs.

!! Do remember that 1 hour soaked hay and timothy haylage might still way oversupply calories for weight loss, regardless of the sugar content !!

If you need help with this, you can find practical advice on weight loss in my Equine Nutrition Learning Centre, and in an on-demand webinar: link in comments.
