Two-year-old Kevin arrived at Woodgreen with a painful fracture in his right front leg. Our vets gave him pain relief straight away, then carefully considered his options. Repairing the leg would mean a very long recovery, and there was no guarantee it would work. So, they decided that removing it was the kindest option for Kevin.
His operation wasn’t straightforward, and afterwards Kevin developed breathing difficulties. He needed antibiotics, oxygen and more treatment from our vets to help him breathe comfortably again.
Learning to get around on three legs was another challenge. His back became stiff and sore, and he struggled to move comfortably. Our team adjusted his pain relief and introduced daily physiotherapy, alongside heat and red light therapy. It was a lot for Kevin to cope with though, and our poor boy became increasingly stressed. He would often back into the corner of his kennel, making himself as small as possible
Kevin was overwhelmed and needed somewhere quieter to continue healing, so an experienced foster family welcomed him home.
On his very first night, Kevin explored his new surroundings, then fell asleep between his foster carers on the sofa, his head resting on a lap.
Within a week, he was discovering toys, enjoying fuss and even having the occasional zoomie! His foster carers continued his physiotherapy while giving him the comfort and company he needed. With their support, Kevin became more comfortable moving around and grew in confidence on three legs.
Then it was time to find Kevin a home of his own. We found him a match, and he quickly settled in.
After everything he’d been through, this affectionate boy could get back to enjoying being a dog.
