Sunday lunchtime I managed to have a lovely cool walk with one of my beautiful lurcher clients.

Despite Greyhound and Saluki breeds hailing originally from North Africa; the ones I have as clients are definitely not acclimatised to this awful heat we’ve been enduring recently.

This girl loves sunbathing in the garden but a walk in blazing heat is not suitable. She hates wet weather though 😂

I often have people tell me “my dog is a rescue from Dubai/Africa/Spain so it’s used to the heat” that is true when they lived in those countries but they are now acclimatised to our wonderfully wet and cold UK climate so their pads and skin aren’t hardy enough for the blazing sun anymore and even breathing in the hot thick air makes them unable to cool down properly through panting.

As a street dog in any of those hot countries they would have found a cool spot and stayed there at the hottest part of the day.

I’m not enjoying this heat and I’m definitely not acclimatising to it 🥵😂 It’s great for getting the washing done quickly though 🥳

I got to watch the partial solar eclipse with my Dad, my two boys and the dog yesterday evening on top of a hill in Compton.

My eldest son is very factual and we spoke about the science behind the eclipse, my youngest son is more comedic and said ‘it looks like a giant Wotsit’ but did impress Grandad with his fact about the eclipse lasting two hours.

The dog couldn’t have cared less and spent her time picking and eating blackberries 🙄😂

Dad kept it real stating how long he would have been dead for by the next one 🙄 and added “if you have children and they have children you can watch it together just like we are now and tell them all about me”

I just kept thinking about a giant wolf named Sköll chasing the sun across the sky. I work with dogs for a reason 🥰

Gutted Mum missed it but I was happy to have spent the day with her before and after the eclipse. I sent her a photo instead 🥰 She went to great lengths to make sure she didn’t have to walk up the big hill with us 😂

An interesting read. At this time of year I see so many posts from parents offering their kids to walk dogs for pocket money.

Very few are aware of the responsibility being a professional dog walker entails.

🐾🐾Should children offer dog-walking services?🐾🐾

Understanding risks, responsibilities, and legal penalties
Every school holiday brings the same posts and questions: “I have some time off school, and I can help you by walking your dog for £5 an hour.” While this may seem like a harmless opportunity for children to earn some pocket money, it’s important to be aware of the potential risks and responsibilities involved.

Dog-walking is not just about enjoying time outdoors with animals. Children need to be insured, able to physically handle the dog, possess a basic understanding of canine behaviour, and know how to administer first-aid in the event of an accident. Without these essentials, both the child and the dog could be placed in unsafe situations.

Legally, children cannot sign contracts or hold Public Liability Insurance in the UK. If a dog causes injury or property damage while being walked by a child, the parent or guardian is legally accountable. Those responsible for children under the age of 16 must ensure the animal’s welfare, and the adult owner remains liable for any harm or damage caused by the dog.

Legal implications under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991
Under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991, both owners and those in charge of a dog can face severe legal consequences if the animal is dangerously out of control in a public place. Penalties depend on the severity of the incident:
• Injury to a person: up to 5 years imprisonment and/or an unlimited fine.
• Injury to an assistance dog: up to 3 years imprisonment and/or an unlimited fine.
• Death caused by a dog: up to 14 years imprisonment and/or an unlimited fine.
• No injury (dangerously out of control): up to 6 months imprisonment and/or an unlimited fine.

Parents, guardians, and young people should carefully consider these legal risks and responsibilities before agreeing to walk dogs for others. It is always worth checking local regulations, ensuring adequate supervision, and prioritising safety for both the child and the animal.

Dog-walking is a serious business as you are putting your beloved dog in the care of someone else; you should be insisting on insurance, experience, ethical methods etc.

I love to see children and dogs interacting in the right way, but we do need to be safe. If your child wants to walk dogs, you need to go with them as a responsible parent.

Many thanks to Denise at Mighty Dog Graphics for the graphic.

Another week of ridiculous temperatures not conducive to being a dog walker 🙄😂

The air is thick and hot, the pavements are hot, it’s hot in the shade…it’s generally hot 🔥I think you get the picture 😂

Alternative care has been offered to all of my clients who have walks booked for this week.

Thank goodness my car has air-con as I’ll be mainly whizzing from one dog to another all week for let-outs in the garden.

Have a good week everyone and stay safe in the sun. 🌞
