🐴🐾 LET THEM SPEAK… 🐾🐴

When your dog or horse has a massage treatment, I don’t expect them to simply stand still and accept what I’m doing.

I want them to move, react and communicate. 💚

During a session, I allow your animal the freedom to move around, take a step away, change position or simply have a moment to process what they’re feeling.

Their body language tells me so much — a change in posture, a shift of weight, a sigh, licking their lips, stretching, yawning, softening through the body or moving away can all give me valuable information.

I want to see those reactions.

It allows me to understand how they are responding to the techniques being used and, most importantly, it gives them a chance to “speak” to me.

Every animal is different, and every session should be too. There’s no rushing and no forcing. I give them time to settle, process and become comfortable with the treatment.

✨ Animal-led therapy means listening to the animal, not just treating the body.

Because sometimes, the best way to understand how they’re feeling is simply to let them show us. 🐾❤️

🐶 Could Your Dog’s Harness or Collar Be Causing Muscle Tension?

We often think about finding a harness or collar that looks good or keeps our dog secure, but fit is just as important as function.

A poorly fitting harness or collar can restrict your dog’s natural movement, create pressure over muscles and joints, and over time may contribute to tension and compensatory movement patterns.

Signs that your dog’s equipment may not be fitting correctly include:
🐾 Rubbing or hair loss
🐾 Reluctance to walk or be fitted with their harness
🐾 Shortened stride or restricted shoulder movement
🐾 Pulling away when touched around the neck, shoulders or chest
🐾 Uneven muscle development
🐾 Muscle soreness or stiffness after walks

The right equipment should allow your dog to move freely without rubbing, pinching or restricting their gait.

As a canine massage therapist, I often assess muscle tension that may be linked to poorly fitting equipment. While massage can help relieve tight muscles and improve comfort, it’s equally important to address the underlying cause. A correctly fitted harness or collar, combined with regular bodywork, can help your dog move more comfortably and reduce unnecessary strain.

💙 Your dog’s muscles work hard every day—making sure their equipment fits properly is one of the simplest ways to support their long-term health and wellbeing.

🐴 Could Muscle Tension Be Affecting Your Saddle Fit?

Did you know that a saddle isn’t always the cause of discomfort? Sometimes, it’s muscle tension underneath that changes how the saddle fits.

When a horse develops tight or sore muscles through the back, shoulders or hindquarters, they may alter the way they stand and move. This can change the shape of their back, meaning a saddle that once fitted well may suddenly feel uneven or create pressure points.

Signs to look out for include:
🐴 Difficulty bending in one direction
🐴 Reluctance to move forwards
🐴 Hollowing through the back
🐴 Bucking, napping or resistance under saddle
🐴 Uneven sweat marks after riding
🐴 Sensitivity when grooming or tacking up

Regular massage therapy can help identify and reduce muscle tension, allowing your horse to move more freely and comfortably. Once those muscles begin to relax, it’s also worth having your saddle fit reassessed, as changes in muscle tone can alter the fit over time.

Remember, a well-fitting saddle and healthy muscles go hand in hand. Looking after one without the other may not solve the problem.

💙 Keeping your horse comfortable starts with looking at the whole picture.

🐴🐶 How Often Should Your Horse or Dog Have Massage Therapy?

One of the questions I’m asked most is, “How often should my horse or dog have a massage?”

The answer is… it depends! Every animal is different, and the ideal treatment plan is based on their age, lifestyle, workload and individual needs.

As a general guide:

🐾 Every 8 - 10 weeks – Ideal for maintenance, helping to keep muscles healthy, supple and comfortable.

🐾 Every 4 - 6 weeks – Suitable for performance animals, those in regular work, or senior horses and dogs who may need a little extra support.

🐾 More frequent sessions – May be recommended for animals with significant muscle tension, compensatory patterns or those returning to work, always alongside veterinary advice where appropriate.

Massage therapy isn’t just about treating problems when they arise—it’s about maintaining healthy muscles, improving movement and helping your horse or dog feel their very best.

Every session with me includes a full static and dynamic assessment, so treatment is always tailored to what your animal needs on that day.

💙 Prevention is always better than cure. Looking after your horse or dog’s muscles regularly can help keep them comfortable, moving freely and enjoying the activities they love.

📩 If you’re unsure how often your horse or dog would benefit from massage, feel free to send me a message—I’d be happy to help.

🐴 Not Every Exercise Session Has to Be Ridden ☀️

When the temperatures rise, taking your horse for an in-hand walk can be a great alternative to riding.

Walking in hand provides gentle exercise without the extra weight of a rider, helping to:
🌿 Keep joints and muscles moving
🌿 Encourage healthy circulation
🌿 Maintain fitness in a low-impact way
🌿 Provide valuable mental stimulation and bonding time
🌿 Support recovery and mobility on rest or lighter work days

During hot weather, it’s important to listen to your horse. Opt for cooler parts of the day, choose shaded routes where possible, take plenty of water, and don’t be afraid to swap a ridden session for a relaxed stroll.

Sometimes, the best thing we can do for our horses is slow down and let them enjoy a gentle walk instead. 💙🐴
