At The Elms K9 Rehabilitation Centre we provide physiotherapy and hydrotherapy for dogs following recovery of IVDD. Some of these are post-surgery others may be conservatively managed. Through our work, we have identified an urgent need for short-term residential rehabilitation. Some owners cannot safely provide the intensive care their dog requires immediately after surgery or during the early stages of conservative treatment. This may be because the owner is elderly or disabled, has limited mobility, lacks suitable support at home, or has work commitments that make continuous care impossible. For example, a dog that would ordinarily attend daycare may no longer be eligible to do so while recovering, leaving its owner without an appropriate care option.
The Elms K9 Rehab has an adjacent outbuilding that we propose to convert into a small, dedicated residential rehabilitation wing. This would allow us to take in Rescue Dachshunds post IVDD surgery when we do not have fosterers available and it would allow us to offer this facility to owners at a charge which would then put money back into the charity to help other dogs.

Meet the Team

Lynn
Lynn is all things Dachshund! However, has a love of all dogs and animals. She first volunteered for Dachshund Rescue in 2017 and is now the chair of the charity. She lives at DR HQ in Thorne, Doncaster, which is where The Elms K9 Rehabilitation is based.
Lynn has six dogs, all rescue Dachshunds, Three of Lynn’s Dachshunds have IVDD, and she has rehabilitated them, both from surgery and conservative management. Some of them have had several episodes. Lynn’s experience rehabilitating her own and rescue dachshunds has led to her being a valuable support for the owners coming to the Elms K9 Rehab Centre. Lynn’s learnt it can be a very lonely, frightening experience when you have a poorly dog. Therefore, from the moment you call The Elms K9 Rehab, Lynn will provide help and support owners through their crisis.

Nicola
Nicola has extensive experience as a veterinary physiotherapist and canine hydrotherapist, she graduated from Harper Adams University with a master’s degree in veterinary Physiotherapy. It became very clear to Nicola that dogs were her passion, and she decided to specialise– she completed the world-renowned Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner course (CCRP) through the University of Tennessee. In addition, she qualified as a canine hydrotherapist.
Nicola has had many years’ experience working as a veterinary physiotherapist in a busy veterinary hospital. She loves treating all breeds and conditions but has a particular interest in neurological patients, she completed her master’s dissertation on the conservative and post-operative rehabilitation of IVDD in Dachshunds. She had the pleasure of meeting Lynn (The dachshund rescue chair) and her Dachshund Marley when he unfortunately was diagnosed with IVDD – Since then she has been involved in working with the dachshund rescue treating rescues with IVDD. She also has a keen interest in helping dogs with arthritis and completed the level 1 CAM Advocate course with canine arthritis management.

Emily
Emily has almost 10 years of veterinary physiotherapy experience, over the last 6 years she has been working in a veterinary rehabilitation centre as a Vet Physio and Hydrotherapist. Before working in a vets she was running her own Veterinary Physiotherapy business. She has professional accreditation from The Institute of Registered Veterinary and Animal Physiotherapists (IRVAP) and the Institute of Canine Hydrotherapists (ICH). Emily is a member of the Canine Hydrotherapy Association (CHA) where she is also a key committee member. This guarantees a high standard of services for clients and continued professional development.Emily has always had a huge passion for animals from a very early age and has always had several animals at home including horses, dogs, cats, rabbits and guinea pigs.

❗️Skip walks completely today

Keep them cool at home with shade, water, and rest.

A missed walk won’t harm them, but heatstroke can.
