During weaning time handlings, lambs inhaling mineral dose is a common cause of death.
The lambs show respiratory signs followed by death within minutes to 24 hours after a handling and dose.
Post mortem shows lots of froth in the airways but often a diagnosis has to be confirmed from lab examination of the lungs.
This occurs more commonly when multiple tasks are being performed at the same time - vaccines/wormers etc.
So take your time with multiple jobs to avoid losses.

Haemonchus warning!🐑
In 2024 and 2025 we have diagnosed multiple cases of Haemonchus on a handful of sheep farms in August and September..
Haemonchus is a worm that attaches it self to the lining of the 4th stomach and takes a blood meal. As a result the sheep are often pale, weak, wobbly and anaemic rather than scouring as you would usually expect from gut worms. Deaths can occur and it can effect lambs and adult sheep.
We can detect this worm in house on faecal worm egg counts which is another reason why its so important to monitor regularly.
Purchasers of sheep this Autumn should ensure they follow quarantine drench procedures to ensure they don't buy in this nasty parasite.
If you would like to find out more or have concerns about Haemonchus please give us a ring.

Good worm control plays a pivotal role in the success or failure of a sheep flock. Get it wrong, and you could be left with stunted growth rates, gut
