We talk a lot about training our dogs to listen to us. “Let’s go” flips that for a minute — it’s my cue that says: your turn. Pick the direction. Choose what’s interesting. Take your time at that lamppost if you want to.
Dogs are constantly managed — where to walk, how fast, when to stop. That’s necessary, but it also means they rarely get to just be curious and decide things for themselves.

Letting them lead occasionally isn’t a training failure, it’s enrichment! It builds confidence, it lets them problem-solve, and honestly, it’s just nice to watch them enjoy a walk on their own terms instead of on yours!!

So next time you’re out, try handing over the reins for five minutes. Say “let’s go,” and let them show you where... assuming your recall is solid, of course!! 😏

Another little tip from my programme - you don’t need a crazy tight, military-esque “heel” unless you’re working towards competitive obedience. For a happy, focused, well-adjusted pet, you need to be an island of calm in a world not built for dogs. That’s where “With Me!” comes in…

Ever noticed how your dog can sit perfectly in the kitchen... but the second you ask them at the park, they look at you like you’ve just spoken Mandarin? 😄🐾

That’s not your dog being awkward. That’s just how dogs learn.

They don’t automatically know that “sit” in the kitchen means the same as “sit” at the park, or on a walk, or at the vet, or at your mate’s house. Every new place is basically a brand new lesson.

So that’s exactly what we do — we practise everything, everywhere. New smells, new distractions, new environments. Until the penny drops and they realise... oh, YOU mean THIS, wherever we are! 🙌🤦‍♀️🙌

That’s when the magic happens. 🐾
