What an AWESOME Friday to round off another pawsome week! 🥳🐾

From woodland adventures 🌲 to zoomies across the open fields 🌾 and finishing the day with a beautiful beach walk with the lovely Rita! 🌊🐕💕

Our group and solo walks were packed with happy paws, wagging tails and plenty of adventures! 🐾❤️

But as always, there’s so much more to our walks than just stretching those legs! 🧠🐕

🐾 Sniffari adventures – Letting those noses lead the way! Sniffing is fantastic mental enrichment, helping our dogs process their surroundings and decompress.

🎯 Focus & engagement – Working on those all-important check-ins, recall skills and making US just as exciting as the environment around them!

🐕 Social superstars – Our group dogs enjoying their friendships, practising appropriate social interactions and learning to be calm and confident around their furry friends.

🌳 Nature’s playground – Woodland obstacles, different surfaces and natural enrichment opportunities to get those brains and bodies working together!

💚 Solo adventures – Tailoring each walk to the individual dog, building confidence, strengthening skills and allowing them to enjoy the world at their own pace.

And of course, plenty of FUN, FREEDOM, HAPPY FACES AND WAGGING TAILS! 😍🐾

Because at Wags And Wisdom, we don’t just walk dogs… we create adventures, build skills and make every walk count! 🐶💚

Rita certainly knew how to finish our Friday in style with some seaside happiness! 🌊☀️🐾

🐾☀️ SUNSHINE, SPEEDY PAWS & A WHOLE LOT OF WAGGING TAILS! 🐶💚

What a PAWSOME day we’ve had at Wags And Wisdom! 🥰🌳

Today’s group walks were packed with fun, friendships, flying ears and a few VERY enthusiastic zoomies! 🤣💨

The gang were absolutely loving life, making the most of the beautiful countryside, exploring exciting smells and enjoying some quality time with their four-legged friends! 🐕🐾

But as always, there’s more going on than just a good old run around! 🧠💪

👃 Sniffing & Exploring – Giving those clever noses a workout! Sniffing provides fantastic mental enrichment and allows dogs to engage in natural behaviours.

🐾 Focus & Engagement – Working on those all-important check-ins, recall and staying connected, even with their besties around!

🐕 Social Skills – Learning to read one another’s body language, respect boundaries and enjoy positive social interactions.

💪 Physical Enrichment – Running, exploring different terrains and building coordination, balance and confidence!

🧠 Emotional Regulation – Because it’s not all about going FULL THROTTLE! Learning to switch between excitement and calmer activities is just as important.

🤣 And judging by some of today’s action shots, a few of the boys clearly thought they’d entered the Doggy Grand Prix! 🏎️💨🏁

💚 Because a fulfilled dog isn’t just a physically tired dog… it’s a dog whose mental, physical and social needs have been met!

And that’s exactly what we aim for on every adventure! 🥰

🐾💚 NEW PAWS ON THE BLOCK! MEET BERTIE! 💚🐾

Everyone give a HUGE Wags And Wisdom welcome to our newest pack member… BERTIE! 🥳🐶

This handsome little chap is a 2-year-old rescue Fell Terrier cross, and yesterday he joined us for his very first group social walk! 🐕🌳

And WOW… what a PAWSOME pack to be part of! 🥰🐾

Now, when introducing a new dog into an established social group, it’s not about throwing everyone together and hoping for the best! 🙈

It’s about creating positive experiences, building confidence and allowing friendships to develop naturally! 💚

👃 SO HOW DID WE INTRODUCE BERTIE?

With a good old-fashioned SCAVENGER HUNT! 🐾🌿

Rather than encouraging immediate face-to-face greetings, we got those noses working!

🐾 Sniffing helps encourage calmness – Giving dogs something natural and rewarding to focus on can help reduce social pressure and excitement.

🐾 Parallel activities build confidence – Dogs can enjoy being around one another without feeling pressured to interact.

🐾 Positive associations – Sharing a relaxed, rewarding experience helps build positive feelings around their new walking companions.

🐾 Mental enrichment – Putting those clever noses to work provides fantastic mental stimulation and gives everyone a little job to do!

🐾 Choice and space – Allowing dogs to investigate their environment and interact at their own pace helps create a much more comfortable social experience.

👀 AND THE MOST IMPORTANT PART? BODY LANGUAGE!

Throughout the walk, I was continually monitoring Bertie AND the rest of the group’s body language.

Watching for those subtle signs of comfort, uncertainty, excitement or stress, from body posture and movement to facial expressions and how each dog responded to the others.

Because a wagging tail doesn’t always mean a happy dog, and successful socialisation isn’t measured by how many dogs say hello! 🧠🐶

It’s about creating safe, positive experiences where dogs can feel comfortable, make good choices and learn to enjoy one another’s company.

💚 Socialisation isn’t about meeting every dog… it’s about learning how to be around other dogs!

And what a lovely first adventure for our newest little recruit! 🥹🐾

🐾 WAGGING TAILS, HAPPY PAWS & BUSY BRAINS! 🐶🌳💚

Yesterday’s adventures were all about FUN, FRIENDSHIPS & FOCUS! 🐕🐾

Our gorgeous gang were having an absolute blast in their social groups, exploring, sniffing, playing and making the most of their adventures! 🥰

But behind all those wagging tails, there’s plenty of learning going on too! 🧠💪

🐾 Focus & Engagement – Building those all-important check-ins, encouraging the dogs to stay connected with me, even when surrounded by their besties!

🐾 Social Skills – Learning to communicate, respect boundaries and enjoy the company of other dogs without getting too carried away!

🐾 Mental Enrichment – Sniffing, exploring, problem-solving and putting those clever noses to work! 👃

🐾 Physical Enrichment – Exploring different terrains, building coordination, confidence and body awareness!

🐾 Impulse Control – Practising patience, recall and making good choices, even when excitement levels are HIGH! 🤪

🐷💕 AND LET’S NOT FORGET JOHNNY!

A little pop-in visit for Johnny, who was absolutely loving life with his favourite pink pig! 🐷😂 Sometimes it’s the simplest things that bring the biggest smiles (and the most enthusiastic tail wags!).

Pop-ins aren’t just about toilet breaks and company. They’re also a fantastic opportunity for some one-to-one attention, playtime and mental stimulation! 💚

✨ Because a great dog walk isn’t just about tiring out their legs… it’s about working those brains too!

And the best bit? The dogs are having so much fun, they don’t even realise how much they’re learning! 😂🐶

Happy dogs, busy brains, muddy paws, pink pigs and plenty of wagging tails… just another day at Wags And Wisdom! 🐾💚

🐾 ENGAGEMENT — WHAT IS IT & WHY DOES IT MATTER? 🐾

One of the BIGGEST things I work on with dogs is engagement… but what does that actually mean? 👀🐶

Engagement is your dog choosing to connect with YOU, even when the world around them is far more exciting!

It’s that little glance back at you. 👀
Checking in without being asked.
Responding to their name.
Choosing to come back when called.
Following your movement.
Being able to disengage from another dog, person, squirrel or exciting smell and reconnect with you.

And THIS is why it’s so important. 👇

Whether your dog is on lead, long line or off lead, you want to know that you still exist at the other end of that walk! 😂

Engagement is the foundation underneath so many of the skills we expect from our dogs — recall, loose-lead walking, neutrality around other dogs, impulse control and being able to navigate distractions.

But engagement shouldn’t mean your dog spends the entire walk staring at you. ❌

Dogs SHOULD sniff.
They SHOULD explore.
They SHOULD interact with their environment. 🌿🐾

The goal is to create a balance where your dog can enjoy their walk while still regularly thinking:

“Where’s my human?” 👀

And remember… engagement is something we build and reward, not something we simply expect because we’re holding the lead.

✨ Reward those spontaneous check-ins.
✨ Make yourself worth coming back to.
✨ Change direction and encourage them to follow.
✨ Play together.
✨ Use food, toys and movement.
✨ Practise around distractions at a distance your dog can cope with.

Because taking the lead off doesn’t magically create freedom…

Good engagement is what helps make freedom possible. 💚🐾
