Rant incoming

Today I went to the Chichester Chilli & Cheese festival and the amount of dogs that were out walking in the midday heat was f***ing ridiculous, it was +25°
I'm going to get this T-shirt made for the next time I go out and it's a heat wave.

Near-full acclimatization for dogs can take 3 to 6 weeks. Even after acclimatization, dogs remain vulnerable to heat stress.

Unlike humans, dogs cool themselves primarily through panting and have limited sweat glands, so their ability to dissipate heat is much lower. Some dogs may never safely acclimatize to extreme heat, including:
Flat-faced breeds (Bulldogs, Pugs, French Bulldogs)
Elderly dogs
Puppies
Overweight dogs
Dogs with heart or respiratory conditions
Heavy-coated breeds

Happy Father's Day to my Spare Hooman! 🐾

You know, the one who said, "We're NOT getting a dog."

Fast forward to today and he's:

✔ Picking up my poo like it's his life's mission.
✔ Sharing his snacks when Mum isn't looking.
✔ Playing when with me in the garden I like to ruin
✔ Taking approximately 4,000 photos of me a week.
✔ Letting me have "just a little bit" of his dinner.

Funny how the hooman who never wanted a dog somehow became my favourite backup human.

Happy Father's Day to all the Spare Hoomans out there—you said you'd never have a dog, but now you can't imagine life without us. ❤️🐾

Today's post comes from a very personal place.

Earlier today, my dog Merlin and I were involved in a dog attack. While the incident itself is being dealt with through the appropriate channels, it has reinforced something I talk about regularly as a trainer: responsible dog ownership, supervision, and management are not optional. They are ESSENTIAL.

In this case, two dogs were able to leave their property and approach us without effective restraint or control. Despite my efforts to protect Merlin, he was bitten and the sound that came from him is a sound I never want to hear again but I sustained a puncture wound on my chest. It was a frightening experience, and one that could have had much more serious consequences. This is also the SECOND time these dogs have attacked Merlin.

Incidents like this highlight why training alone is not enough. Every dog owner has a responsibility to ensure their dog is securely contained, appropriately supervised, and prevented from accessing situations where they may pose a risk to others. Even dogs that are friendly in familiar environments can make poor decisions when aroused, excited, fearful, or given the opportunity to rehearse unwanted behaviours.

Many owners are also unaware of their legal responsibilities. Under Section 3 of the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991, it is a criminal offence for a dog to be dangerously out of control. A dog may be considered dangerously out of control if it injures a person or if there are reasonable grounds for someone to fear that they may be injured.

Depending on the circumstances, owners may face prosecution and courts can impose a range of measures intended to protect the public and prevent further incidents.

As professionals and dog owners, our focus should always be on prevention. Responsible ownership is about far more than loving our dogs. It means putting systems in place to keep them safe, protect the public, and prevent avoidable incidents from occurring.

Today's experience was a stark reminder of how quickly things can go wrong when management and supervision fail or aren't implemented at all. My hope is that by sharing this, more owners will recognise the importance of secure containment, consistent training, and taking their responsibilities seriously.

Our dogs depend on us to make good decisions on their behalf.

This week has seen several heartbreaking reports involving dog-related incidents, and it’s been difficult to read for so many of us. My thoughts are with everyone affected. 💔

While every situation is different, it’s a powerful reminder of how quickly things can change, especially within the home.

This is why I’m so passionate about supporting families, especially those with children, to truly understand their dogs. Learning to recognise canine body language, setting clear and consistent boundaries, and teaching children how to interact safely with dogs.

This isn’t about fear… it’s about awareness, respect, and prevention.

I work with schools, delivering engaging sessions on dog safety, covering the dos and don’ts of interacting with dogs in a way that keeps everyone safe, including your dog. I also support families in their homes, particularly when welcoming a new dog, to help build safe and positive relationships from the very beginning.

Yesterday’s dog walk turned into something I definitely wasn’t expecting

About half a mile from home, Merlin and I passed a little boy walking in his pyjamas, completely on his own.

I stopped to check if he was okay, he said he was going home and carried on. Something didn’t feel quite right, and as I paused wondering what to do next… Merlin made the decision for me.

He flat-out refused to keep walking and insisted we turn back.
We caught up with the little boy, who by then was stuck trying to cross a busy road. I asked if he knew where he lived, he did, so I said I’d walk with him to make sure he got home safely.

His name was Kai, he’s 6 years old, and understandably a bit nervous at first. But when I asked if he liked dogs he said yes and he gave Merlin a stroke, everything changed.
He relaxed straight away and started chatting about his own dog at home.

35 minutes later, we were still walking… and I was just about to call the police because he was so far from home, when a car pulled up, his mum and dad, who had been out frantically searching for him. The relief on their faces said everything.
Kai said goodbye to Merlin and off he went, safe and sound

Merlin might be an absolute pain in my arse sometimes… but wow, that dog just knew something wasn’t right. He stayed calm the whole time and walked right by Kai’s side until he was safely back with his family.
Such a strange, emotional, but ultimately happy walk. So incredibly proud of my boy 🐾

Important UK law update for dog owners! Livestock worrying changes coming soon!

A major update to the law on livestock worrying in England and Wales has become law and will come into force on 18 March 2026. It strengthens the old Dogs (Protection of Livestock) Act 1953.

Here’s what’s changed and what you need to know:
•Fines are no longer capped – if a dog worries (attacks or chases in a way likely to injure) livestock, courts can now impose unlimited fines, replacing the previous £1,000 maximum.
•More animals are protected - The law now includes llamas and alpacas alongside sheep, cattle, goats, horses.
•Bigger scope of where offences count – incidents on roads or paths near livestock can also be offences, not just in fields
•Stronger police powers – Police can seize and detain dogs, take DNA or bite-impression evidence, and get warrants to investigate suspected worrying when no owner is present.

📍 Who it affects: anyone walking, training or handling dogs in rural areas, especially near grazing livestock.

💡 Top tip for dog owners: keep control of your dog around farm animals (lead where needed) and teach reliable recall, it’s not just good etiquette, it’s now backed up by tougher law and bigger penalties.
