🐶🦈 Has your gorgeous puppy suddenly turned into a tiny land shark?
Hands. Sleeves. Trouser legs. Children’s ankles. Nothing is safe. 😬
Puppy biting can be exhausting, especially when it feels as though you’ve tried EVERYTHING.
But here’s something really important to remember:
The biting is often telling us something.
Before focusing on how to stop it, have a little detective moment and ask WHY your puppy might be biting. 🔎🐾
They might be…
💤 TIRED
Young puppies need a LOT of sleep. An overtired puppy can quickly become a bitey puppy.
🦷 TEETHING
Those new teeth coming through can make little gums sore. Try giving your puppy appropriate things to chew, or make a simple cold teething soother.
🤪 OVER-EXCITED
Puppies aren't very good at putting the brakes on themselves yet. If play gets increasingly wild and the teeth appear, they may need help calming down rather than more play.
🍽️ HUNGRY
Notice whether the biting gets worse before meals. Sometimes a hungry puppy is a particularly grumpy little crocodile!
🎾 BORED
Chewing, biting and general puppy hooliganism can also be your puppy creating their own entertainment.
💬 COMMUNICATING
This one is easily missed. Your puppy can't say “I've had enough”, “I need some space” or “I'm uncomfortable”. Their body language often whispers it first, and biting can come when those earlier signals have been missed.
✨ TRY THIS:
For the next few days, keep a quick puppy biting diary.
Jot down:
• What time it happened
• What was happening just before
• When they last slept
• When they last ate
• What you were doing together
You might be surprised how quickly a pattern starts to appear. Once you understand the why, it becomes much easier to prevent your puppy biting before the teeth arrive. 🐾
And remember, puppy biting is an incredibly common part of puppyhood. Your puppy isn't plotting your downfall...
..although your favourite slippers may disagree. 😂💜
