Having a reactive Dog can make their world so small and let’s face it sometimes it even makes our own world so small, many people buy a dog in the hopes that’ll open up the world for them allow them to socialise more and get them out exploring

However if that Dog becomes reactive often we can do the exact opposite and end up only venturing out of the house early morning and late evening constantly trying to dodge other people and only daring to venture to “safe” and Familiar locations. This can make their world as well as our world feels so small

Now not all dogs will want to be friends with every Dog at the end of their journey, but your Dog should be able to coexist in the world around them and should have access to all the great adventures if you need help getting in touch

Did you know there is a dog that physically cannot bark? The Basenji — one of the oldest dog breeds in the world — is completely bark-free. Instead, they produce a remarkable sound known as a "barroo", a sort of yodel unique to the breed that you really have to hear to believe.

Basenjis have been around for thousands of years. They appear in ancient Egyptian artefacts and were originally bred as hunting dogs in Central Africa. Away from their ancient history, they have a very modern quirk: they are fastidious self-groomers, cleaning themselves much like cats do. Distinctive, intelligent, and full of character.

At AlphaB, we work with dogs of all breeds — from the most common to the wonderfully unusual. Do you own a Basenji, or have you ever come across one? Tell us in the comments — we'd love to hear from you, and feel free to tag a friend who'd find this as fascinating as we do!

Here's a question that might surprise you: when did your dog last have a proper day off?

Not a shorter walk. Not a quiet afternoon. A full rest day — no training, no trips to busy places, no stimulating activities. Just nothing.

Rest days are one of the most underused tools in dog training, and yet they can make a real difference to how your dog learns, behaves, and feels. When dogs are constantly active or stimulated, their cortisol and adrenaline levels stay elevated. Over time, this can lead to chronic stress — and dogs who are chronically stressed become harder to train, more reactive, and perpetually in search of the next rush of stimulation.

There are two types of rest day worth knowing about. A complete rest day means no walks, no formal training, no exciting games — your dog is encouraged to fully switch off. An active rest day means avoiding anything arousing or stressful — no triggers, no busy environments — but might include calm garden time or very gentle mental engagement.

Both types matter. And both benefit you as much as your dog.

If your dog is high-drive, reactive, or just always "on", a regular rest day — ideally at least once a fortnight, and ideally once a week — can be genuinely transformative.

Has your dog had a rest day recently? Let us know in the comments — we'd love to hear how you wind things down at home.

Board and Train isn't only for when life gets busy. Sometimes it's simply the right approach.

When a dog and owner learn together from scratch, both can be figuring things out at the same time — and that can slow progress for both. Our Board and Train programme separates the learning, so your dog gets to work with an experienced trainer, building skills and confidence without either of you second-guessing each other in the process.

While your dog is working with us, you're actively involved too. You'll receive regular videos showing your dog's progress, along with detailed written messages covering the exact handling and communication techniques being used — so you're learning right alongside them, just at your own pace. You can even send us your own videos practising those techniques at home, with or without your dog, and we'll give you feedback so your skills are sharp and ready for when it matters.

By the time you're reunited, you're not starting from scratch together — you each arrive prepared. That's what makes the difference.

Whether you're looking for a genuine training transformation, a progress boost, or simply a smarter way to build your skills alongside your dog's, our residential programme is designed to work.

Programmes run from two to eight weeks and start from £1,400, with finance available via Clearpay.

Reactivity is one of the most misunderstood behaviours in dogs — and one of the most common reasons owners feel overwhelmed, frustrated, or even embarrassed on walks.

The truth is, a reactive dog isn't a bad dog. Reactivity is a communication — your dog telling you they're struggling with something in their environment. Understanding *why* they react is the first step to real, lasting change.

At AlphaB Dog Training, we work with reactive dogs regularly. Our approach is rooted in understanding each dog as an individual — because no two dogs react for exactly the same reason, and no two training journeys should look the same. We believe strongly in empowering owners throughout the process; you're not just handed a set of instructions, you're an active part of your dog's progress.

If you've been told your dog is "just aggressive" or "too far gone," we'd respectfully disagree.
