Headshaking can be one of the most frustrating things to navigate as a horse owner.

The triggers can be incredibly varied, and what affects one horse may have absolutely no impact on another. Even with the same horse, you can have good days, difficult days and days where something completely unexpected seems to set them off.

That’s why I don’t believe in looking at headshaking as just one isolated symptom. With the horses I support, we look at the bigger picture. We look for patterns, consider potential triggers, think about nutrition and allergies and pay attention to what is happening with the horse as a whole.

If headshaking is something you’re struggling to understand, you don’t have to work it all out alone.

My HH Headshakers Monthly Subscription provides ongoing support as we work together to understand your horse, identify potential triggers and support their wellbeing.

The next programme starts 4th November 2026. For more information, head to my website to get in touch. The link is in my bio.

These are the faces that make me love what I do.

There is something incredibly special about seeing a horse change during or after a therapy session. Sometimes it’s a huge difference, and sometimes it’s something much more subtle… a softer eye, a deeper breath, a more relaxed expression or simply a horse who looks more comfortable in themselves.

Seeing a horse relax, feel more comfortable and become more trusting is something I never take for granted. I feel incredibly lucky that owners trust me to work with their horses, and I treasure every one of these relationships.

A balanced horse is a happy horse. And happy horses make me very happy indeed!

When a horse feels more comfortable and balanced in their body, we often see changes that go far beyond how they move.

They may seem more relaxed in themselves, breathe more freely, move with greater ease or simply appear more settled and confident.

And when your horse feels good, you feel it too.

As owners, we know our horses so well. We notice the little things, when they feel different under saddle, when they aren’t quite themselves, or when they feel edgy or unsure. This often shows up in behaviours like bucking, rearing, kicking, spooking, head shaking, refusing to load or crib biting. These are not ‘naughty’ behaviours, it’s how horses ask for help.

That’s why I take a whole-horse approach to every HH Therapy Session. I’m not looking at one isolated area or trying to force a particular outcome. I’m looking at the individual horse, listening to what their body is telling me and allowing them the time and space to respond.

The ultimate goal is about helping horses feel more like themselves, and enjoying that happier partnership together.

When you see your horse every single day, it can be surprisingly difficult to spot subtle changes. You become so familiar with how they stand, move and carry themselves that small differences can easily go unnoticed.

You might notice something feels ‘off’, but not necessarily be able to put your finger on it.

That’s why visual records are such an important part of my HH Therapy sessions.

Before the session, I take photos of the head, spine and both sides of the body, alongside observing how your horse moves, stands and responds. Afterwards, I repeat this process so we have something tangible to compare.

It gives us a visual record of the changes taking place, rather than relying solely on memory or how things felt on the day.

And when we continue working together, these records become even more valuable. They allow us to look back over time and see changes that might otherwise be easy to miss.

When you see your horse every day, sometimes you need a picture to show you just how far they’ve come.

Save this post as your reminder that taking pictures can give you some incredible insight into your horse’s progress.

If you’ve never come across CranioSacral Therapy before, it can be difficult to understand how such a gentle therapy can have such a deep effect on the horse.

Equine CranioSacral Therapy uses light touch to connect with the horse’s body and central nervous system, to encourage the body’s self-healing mechanism to rebalance at its own pace.

There’s no forcing, manipulating or trying to make the body change before it is ready.

Think of it as a reset button for your horse.

Instead, I work with the horse, listening to their responses and allowing them the time and space to process what is happening.

Every horse responds differently, which is why each Happy Horse Therapy session is completely bespoke. I observe the whole horse, take time to step back and watch their behaviours, and allow the session to be guided by the horse.

For me, it’s about listening rather than forcing and observing rather than assuming.

Hello, and welcome to Happy Horse Therapy!

If you’re new here, I thought it was about time I introduced myself and shared a little of the story behind Happy Horse Therapy.

Horses have been a constant in my life for as long as I can remember. My first real taste of riding started at ten years old, and I quickly became the child who would do just about anything to spend more time around horses!

Over the years, horses have always been there whilst I’ve visited some wonderful places and been through some very different chapters of life. I spent 18 years living in Malaysia, where I combined running an architectural practice with riding ex-racehorses and polo ponies, before returning to the UK and discovering a love for Endurance Riding.

One of the biggest chapters was my partnership with my Arab, Saroukh. We had 17 years together and built the kind of relationship that teaches you so much about trust, communication and really getting to know your horse.

Eventually, I found myself in the Quantock Hills in Somerset and decided it was time to follow a dream I’d had for many years: to work with horses.

That led me to Equine CranioSacral Therapy and, ultimately, to Happy Horse Therapy.

Today, I combine CranioSacral Therapy with Tensegrity Balancing, using a gentle, individual approach that allows each horse the time and space to respond to the therapy in their own way.

My background in design has also stayed with me. I’ve always had a keen eye for detail, and I now use that skill in a very different way, observing how horses move, stand, breathe and interact with the world around them.

I feel incredibly lucky to have found a way to combine two things I’ve always loved: horses and helping them.

And I’m so glad you’re here 🤍

As therapists, we provide a professional service, but ask yourself the question, are your forms, reports and exercise plans reflecting that?

As you can see, Chris is loving the change that Equicantis has made to her practice 🙌

If you gave yourself a second to think about it, and the answer was actually no, your reports aren't a reflection of your service, then DM us for a free trial to see how we can help you 👌

Highly recommended. This is great opportunity to learn from two equestrians who are so generous in sharing their knowledge. It will make you think! Check it out and see you there

Are you coming? This is THE Ritter Event of the year (do not miss this!)

It’s called the Thinking Riders Challenge and it is our big annual event that everyone has been waiting for.

This is how it works:
November 15-24th. We go live every other day with a brand new training designed to develop and expand your knowledge, understanding, and awareness so that you can be the BEST rider possible for your horse!

You will learn HOW to:

- Evaluate yourself as a rider so you understand how YOU learn Dressage BEST (so you are not pulling out your hair trying to learn in a way that just does not work for you)

- Become a curious rider open to the opportunities right in front of you each time you ride (so you can shift your thinking to see difficulties as interesting training puzzles instead of reasons why you need to give up and take up knitting or golf instead)

- Understand the biomechanics and psychology that underlie EVERYTHING you should be doing with your horse (so you are choosing the right kind of work for what your horse needs instead of wondering why your horse is not developing the way you would like )

- Learn how to look beneath the symptoms to understand what is REALLY going on and know how to use this information to fix training issues for once and for all (so you are not constantly sticking band-aids on problems and can finally get back on track in your riding )

- Unlock limitless learning for yourself AND your horse by shifting the WAY you view the training “scale” (so you can endlessly feed your passion for learning and progressing up the levels)

There will be riding exercises. There will be exercises to do on the ground. There will be homework (don’t worry, it is completely optional). There will be live Q&As with us where you can get your questions answered.

Check out these Prizes. One raffled off each day:
1-Hour Online Coaching Session with Thomas (€225)
Pivo Equestrian Premium Pack $309,99
“Dressage Principles Based on Biomechanics” book signed by Thomas & Shana (priceless, out of print)
“Long Reining: From the Beginning through the Levade” book signed by Thomas & Shana Ritter (€113,49)

There will be ONE BIG scholarship prize at the end for our 2023 signature course, the “What Why How of Training your Horse”.

And, as always, there will be tons of fun and lightbulb moments.

You do NOT want to miss this. And bring your friends for this fun, mega event because learning is great but learning with friends is EVEN BETTER.
