I’ve been chatting to a couple of fellow rescuers and we’re not sure what’s going on this month, this year Infact, with the huge influx of requests to take unwanted pets. Yes, there are cases which are just desperate, where people’s circumstances are quite drastic and nobody is to blame, but the vast majority of requests are:
- The kids got fed up
-I have an allergy
-We got a dog
-We had a baby
-Our child went to uni
-Our child has exams
-They smell
- we just want a better life for them
Well we don’t get any funding and it’s our choice to try and make a difference but if pet shops and breeders stopped selling animals, it would end the supply and demand which ultimately ends up with one of the situations mentioned above.
It’s hard not to sound judgemental and it’s almost always taken badly when I say that taking on an animal is a lifelong commitment and (almost) all of the above situations would have been known to happen one day. So… what we need is for P@H and breeders to stop that moment of “OMG they’re so cute, let’s get rabbits/guinea pigs NOW” for them to be looking for new homes within a year.
Folks….. stop buying animals unless you’re going to commit to them, for life. 🙏🐾🐾
