It shares many skills and behavioural characteristics with, for example, the Labrador, Golden Retriever, Spaniel and Duck Tolling Retriever in that it is active, intelligent, a good worker and most of all a loving and

loyal family dog. On this site you will find information about the breed, about how to go about getting a Stabyhoun puppy and the efforts that go into breeding and maintaining a healthy population of Stabyhouns. The role of the UK Stabyhoun Association is:

1. Promoting the Stabyhoun as an active family dog with good working and showing potential in the UK
2. Educating potential owners about the characteristics of the Stabyhoun
3. Identifying suitable homes for puppies and support all new owners of this wonderful, unique and sometimes challenging breed
4. Safeguarding the genetic integrity of the breed in the UK, and to assist in safeguarding the genetic integrity of the breed worldwide
5. Promoting responsible breeding and develop, with the assistance of established breeders and associations, our own breeding programme – always seeking to learn and understand more about successful breeding while educating our members about the keys to successful breeding
6. Advising Stabyhoun owners on all aspects of training and welfare
7. Organising workshops and training days that promote good dog ownership for all UK Stabyhoun owners

WETTERHOUN WEDNESDAY!

Stabyfest is over for another year. Our Committee works hard for the organisation of this special event for the UK Stabyhoun and Wetterhoun, a big 'Thank You' to the Dutch judges who came to see how the UK populations are matching up to expectations for these two special breeds!

It was an important one for our Wetterhouns because it was the litter assessment for the lovely Treasure pups born in 2025.

Litter sire Peike could not be with us, but we were delighted to see Oma (Grandma!) Tyska, Auntie Yfke, Mamma Aafke, all six pups from the litter and three half-siblings.

The litter assessment notes were: High diversity in type with various stages of development. Overall correct types, varying from excellent to very good in development and coat plus breed typical behaviour.

This is a ringing endorsement for the hard work of the Breeding Committee in selecting the lovely match for this ultra rare breed.

As a final honour, those people staying to the end of the day were able to enter the competition to find the Judge's Favourite and our very own Wetterhoun coordinator is proud to share the news that the 2026 Winner was her boy DUSTY!

2 weeks to go until our annual celebration of the Staby and Wetterhoun!

We love seeing the litter reunions, the excited wagging tails, puffed chests from the boys 🤦‍♀️ and disowning looks from the mummas!
It is a really wonderful part of the breed preservation to see the siblings assessed alongside each other and their parents giving valuable information for future litters 🧬

WETTERHOUN CORNER – Hot weather, cool dogs & a very strange sky! 🌙

Well, what a week it has been weather-wise! We think quite a few of us have been looking at our Wetterhouns and wondering how on earth they manage with those lovely thick, curly coats in this heat!

Wetterhouns seem to have their own ideas about keeping cool. Some will head straight for the water, some will find the coolest patch of shade, and others will find a cold kitchen floor and decide they're not moving for the rest of the day!

A few little things can make a big difference when it's hot:

💦 Plenty of fresh water
🌳 Lots of shade and somewhere cool to lie
🌅 Walks early in the morning or later in the evening
🧊 Frozen treats made from their usual food can be a great way to keep them occupied
💧 And, if your Wetterhoun loves water, letting them have a safe paddle or swim is obviously a bonus!

And don't forget that wonderful coat. Keeping it clean, well maintained and free from mats and excess dead coat is particularly important in warm weather. But it's also worth remembering that the Wetterhoun's coat is part of what makes the breed what it is.

And then we have tonight... 🌙🌞

There's something rather special happening in the sky this evening. The Moon will pass in front of the Sun, giving us a very deep partial solar eclipse here in the UK. In many places, more than 90% of the Sun will be covered.

Which got me wondering...

What will our Wetterhouns think about it?

Will they notice that the light suddenly looks different?

Will they wonder why evening seems to be arriving rather early?

Will they sit staring at the sky wondering what on earth is going on?

Or will they simply look at us as if we're being ridiculous, have a quick drink, find their favourite cool spot and carry on as normal?

There have been reports and discussion around animals behaving differently during eclipses, although every dog is different. So it would be really interesting to hear from Wetterhoun owners afterwards.

Did your Wetterhoun notice anything unusual tonight?

And, of course, if you're watching the eclipse yourselves, please remember never look directly at the Sun without proper certified eye protection.
