Today I met curious Spud that wonders a lot about the outside world that has caused him to develop anxiety. So we are going to demystify the outside world for Spud. Start with reducing his anxiety, ensure he is receiving sufficient sleep, review his diet, review enrichment activities and introduce mind games to work that clever little brain. Also, revisit socialisation and create a tailored plan. puppytraining

See what the new year brings šŸ¤”šŸ¾šŸ¶ Managing and leading multi-dog households and resources 🧸 šŸ„Ž that are important to some dogs is vital to keep healthy relationships between the dogs living together. If we don’t then relationships can sometimes break down and dogs being dogs revert to primitive ways of sorting it out - confrontations and fights can break out amongst the group if we are not being mindful of those resources that mean a lot to some dogs in your multi-dog household. 🐶

This afternoon, I’ve been back to visit Bonnie and her owners to view her progress. Happy to report that Bonnie’s biting habit of her owners is reducing. Her owners have been amazingly consistent when applying Bonnie’s training plan. We introduced more breed specific play today and involved more human engagement play with Bonnie, and avoiding the use of the same toy play such as ball throwers. The herding ball was the name of the game for us and Bonnie today. Now at 6 months, can see her breed specific innate behaviour actions awakening - especially when putting a herding ball in front of a Border Collie …..eye - stalk - chase 🐾.

Always wanted to try the animation photography šŸ˜‚ The before animation photograph is me and my dogs sat at a picnic bench. That aside - if you are experiencing behaviour or training concerns with your dog or puppy, get in touch and we can start to navigate through the frustration and difficulties of training and raising a dog. Happier days are not to far away 🐾🐶😊.

Today I have been working with Bonnie who is six months old. Bonnie has been practicing attention seeking with her mouth at an escalating level. When Bonnie’s owner tries to pushback with training to deter or distract her away, she comes straight back with an increasing pressure of a nip and bite. We are helping Bonnie to understand that the escalating biting is not cool to do to humans. Being a Collie and ultra clever she learned today that the bite game with humans is over. As soon as you collect your pup establish boundaries for the pup to learn, teaching what’s allowed and what’s not allowed will prevent and stop any further escalation of a biting habit to access attention.

Meet Chester who has come a long way in over coming his massive fear of being in a grooming environment. He was indeed a very scared dog, that exhibited physical behaviour signs of fear as soon as he was presented with a grooming environment. The entire event of the injury, the emergency trip to the Veterinarian, undergoing emergency general anaesthetic, pain, unsure of what is happening or going to happen was way to much for him. The entire episode for him caused a huge fear response to develop in his brain and with that he would respond in an instant with huge fear pushback. His physical signs of fear was constantly trying to run away from the table, jumping off table, urinating, defecating, salivating heavily, shaking. Even bathing was scary because he knew a haircut would follow on from the bath. Absolutely terrible to watch, but we got to work with his triggers and emotions and designed a behaviour modification plan based on his emotional needs around the trigger stimulus. A long road but as you can see, he has overcome his worst fear and achieved real resilience. We are never going to change his genetics of being automatically anxious, that is Chester and now that everyone knows how to make life manageable for him he is thriving in his home and overall life. He has a large world now and is triumphant in going sailing and motor-homing now with his owners that have worked incredibly hard to help him.

Stopping escalation in the predation cycle. Olives owners had tried the food rewards, the avoidance, the distracting with food and toys but nothing worked and the behaviour was constant and escalating. Owners wanted to understand at a deeper level of what was going on in little Olives’s mind. We determined the cause and stopped the escalation that could have put everyone’s safety at risk. Advised changing from harness to collar to improve touch communication down the lead to the dog. Harness’s are designed from a working operation so the dog can safely work forward of the handler. When a pet dog is not under safe control the dog should be on collar for training and ease of communication between dog and handler. Both owners did great work with Olive and this resulted in a transformation in Olive’s behaviour outside with vehicles. We were all delighted to walk without worry and concern and enjoyed the walk! Olives future safety walking on pavements and anywhere near vehicles is now under control. Plus future training objectives of one day teaching recall with Olive is now a stronger possibility than before. Cheese šŸ§€ sausages, 🧸, avoiding situations and presenting a passive energy as a handler alone will not work to interrupt and create new neural networks in the dog’s mind to switch off escalating in the predation cycle. We have to work closer with the dog’s instincts and chemical neurobiology because that is what is driving the behaviour- a very powerful cocktail of chemicals and unfortunately cheese and sausages are not strong enough.
