This video isn’t about teaching a dog to guard, it’s about teaching a dog when to guard.

This is Alfie, a working dog🐾

We play. We train. We have fun.
Then, only when asked, the switch turns on.

A working dog should be able to enjoy life, do tricks, engage, relax and then move into guard on cue, not by impulse.
Guarding shouldn’t live in a dog’s head 24/7.
When it does, that’s stress — not strength.

The real win is an off switch:
✔️ Play without tension
✔️ Focus without chaos
✔️ Guard without guessing
Alfie doesn’t decide when to protect.
I do.

That’s not suppression — that’s trust. 🖤

One of the most important things you can teach your dog isn’t a sit, a down, or a fancy trick , it’s focus👀

When your dog chooses to look at you, everything changes.
Eye contact is communication, its trust , and reassurance 🫶
It’s your dog saying, “I’m listening. You matter. I feel safe with you.”

A dog that can focus on their handler is calmer, more confident, and easier to guide through the world. That focus becomes the foundation for training, recall, impulse control, and even emotional regulation. Before a command lands, attention has to land first ✔️

Have fun with it❤️ they live in your world, but to them you are their whole world🫶

Here we have my boy Syd 🐾

A Boxer ... the big, daft, “stupid” dog people think they know 🐕
But honestly? This breed is incredibly intelligent. You just have to be willing to put the work in and be consistent (and yes… repetitive 😅).

He used to pull and try to control the walk.
Now he doesn’t 🙂
That change came from showing him that I control the walk — calmly, fairly, and every single time.

Simple distractions aren’t a big deal anymore.
Things that used to spook him badly?
Now he looks… and carries on his way.

Progress like this doesn’t happen overnight, but it does happen when you put the time in 🫶 and Syd is proof of that 🐾💙

Before anyone comes at me about the position of the slip lead , I know because I loosened it 🤣

Training Tip of the Week 🐾

Does your dog know how to switch off?

Is your dog still hyper when they get back from a walk?

Do they constantly follow you around the house and struggle to settle?

Teaching your dog a designated place can make a huge difference. This could be a crate, a mat, or simply their bed.

Spend just 15 minutes a day working on this and make it fun and rewarding. Ask your dog to go to their place, take a few steps away, then reward them for staying there. Gradually increase the distance and duration.
Over time, your dog will learn that when you say “place”, that’s where they go and that they’ll be released when it’s time. This helps build calmness, independence, and great house manners 🐶✨
