Guide to Grooming Your Curly Coat Dog

Curly coats are beautiful but high-maintenance. Their dense, continuously growing hair tangles and mats easily, so a consistent grooming routine is essential for your dog’s comfort and health.

Brushing - the most important step in maintaining a lovely curly coat and ideally is done as part of a daily routine. This helps prevent any matting, knots and skin irritation. Using a harness will cause matting so it’s important to brush them areas immediately after it’s taken off.

Bathing - at home is recommended every 2-3 weeks using a high quality shampoo and conditioner. This will keep the coat clean from mud and help remove any unwanted parasites. Always dry thoroughly and brush while drying—wet curls mat quickly if left unattended.

Professional Grooming - is recommended every 6–8 weeks to support a dog’s health, comfort, appearance, and behavior. By keeping their coat, skin, and nails in optimal condition. It is a proactive approach to maintaining your pet’s health, preventing potential issues, and ensuring they stay in good shape.

The stunning Misha came in for her regular groom yesterday 🧡

She’s an absolutely beautiful example of the Chow Chow—a breed known for its lion-like mane, dignified presence, and that signature blue-black tongue.

The Chow Chow is an ancient working breed originating from China, where they were once used for hunting, guarding, and pulling carts. Today, they’re cherished as loyal companions and serene family pets, especially suited to city life thanks to their calm nature and low exercise needs.

Despite their aloof demeanor with strangers, a well-socialized Chow is never aggressive—always dignified, calm, and deeply devoted to their people.

Chows require thorough brushing at least twice a week to prevent matting, especially around the head and puppy coat areas. Regular bathing (about once a month) and proper drying with cool air help maintain a healthy skin and coat. Routine ear cleaning, eye care, and nail trimming are also essential parts of their grooming regimen.
