No excuses! It’s so easy to body condition score your horse, and all you need is your hand and eyes so you can do it at any time!

It is also really useful for those body types which don’t carry much weight over the ribs but are cresty with an apple bottom!

Here we describe the perfect score (3) but we advise you look up the scoring system for more detail if needed- and combine this with your weigh taping to keep a close eye on your horses weight this Spring.

Time to start keeping track of your horses weight! The grass is growing and now is a good time to start recording their weigh to check they aren’t gaining too much, especially if they are already overweight or laminitic.

Here’s a reminder from Pippa, one of our vets, on how this quick and easy technique is carried out. The main aim is to be consistent with your technique and try and do it regularly- for example every fortnight or monthly

It is best combined with body conditioning scoring which we will show you next!

Most of you will have heard of ‘wolf teeth’ but did you know sometimes they can be hidden out of sight under the gum??

These unerupted ‘blind’ wolf teeth can be felt as small hard lumps under the mucosa in front of the upper molar teeth.

They are often positioned at a diagonal angle and due to their location in the mouth cause discomfort and pain when the bit presses the gum against the hidden tooth. This can show up as bitting issues and head shaking.

They are simple to remove, the gum just needs incising over the tooth and then they are elevated and extracted under local anaesthetic and sedation as normal.

We always have a thorough check in a horses mouth during our dentals for anything like this and hopefully this guy will be feeling a lot more comfortable soon!

It’s always tricky as an owner when a horse starts to buck and show ‘behavioural problems’, is there an underlying reason why?

We work with concerned horse owners that come to us to find and treat any pain related causes that might be contributing to a horse’s discomfort.

In this horse’s case there could be a couple of contributing factors so it is a process of elimination, but no two cases are the same, and all require an individual approach. 🐴

Did you know that sarcoids and other tumours, such as melanomas, can be removed using laser surgery?

We recently held a clinic to treat some of our cases that were suitable for this technique.

The laser uses a high energy light beam to cut and vaporise tissue, removing the mass. There are some advantages of this, compared to other treatments and forms of removal such as :

💉less bleeding
💉reduced pain (nerves sealed)
💉lower infection risk
💉less spread of tumour cells (compared to a scalpel)
💉lower recurrence (as tumour cells are killed)
💉A faster recovery due to all the above!

Treatment is always more successful when sarcoids are treated early, and surgery is easier when they are small- so don’t be afraid to ask your vet about any lumps and bumps you notice on your horse!
