🤔️ Medicating dogs for behavioural issues ❌️

If you follow Impackt Behaviour you'll have read a few posts recently of her clients dogs being on medication to 'manage behaviour'. We are talking behaviours like reactivity towards dogs. The owners of these dogs have reached out for help to overcome their dogs reactivity. Some have seen 'clinical behaviourists', others have gone straight for vets advice. In either circumstance each has led to their dog being put on medication like Fluoxetine. When the meds don't work, the owners are left drawing a blank! Then finally, they find Impackt Behaviour and the wider Impackt Team to help truly understand what is going on for their dog and get them on the right track through a thorough off lead assessment with dogs and people.

Reactivity isn't a medical deficiency—it's a communication issue born from poor leadership, lack of training, with varying intensity levels dependent on breed genetics and drive❗️

If you're ready to ditch the frustration and give your dog the clarity they are actually need, reach out to book a 1-1 assessment today.

Here's Maggie, my high drive dog being amazing 👏

Starting Soon - Neutrality Class for dogs who struggle with lead reactivity, over‑arousal, or frustration around environmental triggers.

This class builds the foundations of neutrality —
the ability to see the world and stay
composed alongside their handler.

Dogs in this class learn to:

● Build neutrality — calmly observe dogs, people, movement, and noise without reacting.

● Develop impulse control — make better choices even when excited or frustrated.

● Reduce reactivity — through structured setups, distance work, and controlled exposures.

● Strengthen handler focus and confidence — learning that their person is the most important anchor in stimulating environments.

The goal is simple: a dog who can walk
through the world with calm confidence.

Where: Boston
Day: Mondays
Time: 9:30-10:30
Price: £12

The "Recall Freeze" (And Why Your Dog Is Ignoring You)

Picture this: Your dog is off lead, drifting too far ahead. You call them. They pause, look back at you for a split second... and then turn right back around and carry on.

That brief pause is a decision point. Your dog is weighing their options: Return to you, or keep going?

The biggest mistake I see owners make here is repeating the dogs name. The dog stops briefly, carries on, gets called again, and carries on. Eventually, their name just becomes background noise and returning becomes optional.

Name for Attention! Command for Action!

Use your dog's name to catch their attention and break their focus. But you MUST follow up immediately with a clear command to set the expectation.

See George in this video. He speeds off on the scent of something so I call him. He pauses and I tell him what I want. George-Come! If I didn't tell him what I wanted him to do, he would go self employed and carry on running to who knows where!

When your dog is off lead, how far is too far?

This was a great question asked at puppy class this week. 👌

The honest answer is that it depends entirely on how solid your dog’s recall is in that specific environment, as well as their prey drive and hunting instincts.

When you’re first experimenting with off-lead freedom or working on a long line, bring high-value rewards on every walk. You’re competing with the environment, so you need to be more valuable to come back to than whatever has caught their attention. Practice recalling every few minutes—especially with dogs that like to range further out—and test the recall when they’re mildly distracted.

In the video, you can see my Maggie on a regular walk across an open stretch of countryside. She loves to run, create distance, hunt, and track, whereas my other dogs naturally stay much closer.

Allowing that kind of distance is only an option because I know I can get her back. In unfamiliar places, I recall her in to stay much closer. If she ignores a recall more than once on a walk, she goes straight back on the lead for the rest of the trip. If her head is somewhere else on that occasion, safety comes first. Ill have ac whistle handy that can be hard over a greater distances to!

Sorry, for the sound, it was a very windy day!

Breakthru Behaviour socials have been out of action lately due to social media fatigue❗️😮‍💨

Behind the media, it's been business as usual. New puppy class has begun, behavior cases, and planning new classes for neutrality and doggy socials starting in September!

Ill be back with more behaviour insights and training tips as my batteries for being on socials reach full capacity 😅

Enjoy this teefy video of Georgie porgie 😍
