Our little fur baby Winnie has been a bit unwell and ended up at the emergency vets last night with us all getting home at 4am.
It looks like shes developed Immune-Mediated Thrombocytopenia (ITP) which is an issue with the blood failing to clot as there is a lack of platlets in the blood. However she's due to have a blood test on Friday to confirm this diagnosis.
Following her blood test last night, the vet found that she had 0 platelets.
This was all as a result of finding a single bruise on her belly and just a couple of hours later, 2 more had appeared plus her ear too. I felt this was too unusual for Winnie and that unexplained bruising on the torso is a good indicator of internal bleeding/clotting issues. She was still her usual happy self and had just been playing and running around minutes before I saw the bruise. So no indication that she was unwell or in pain.
I'll share a lot more information about her diagnosis once we have a clearer picture of what's going on. But wanted to share this as it goes to show how important it is to monitor your dog's skin, coat and body in general.
Both vets I've seen last night and today have commented on how quickly this has been found as most people wouldn't have noticed the signs until much further progressed. Which isn't a boast, but its just due to my profession and training around animal health and first aid. So I think its important that we all know what's normal for our own dogs and to be alert to any changes no matter how small they may seem.
Winnie is now on bed rest and not best pleased that she can't jump on the sofa or our bed. But hopefully once treatment starts, she'll soon be back to her sprightly self
