Well… that didn’t take long! 😎

Our first Sunday morning Retriever Group starting 13th September is now FULL.

So, I’m opening up a second group.

6 weeks of progressive training for open/novice dogs and handlers — building week on week rather than just turning up and doing a collection of exercises.

We’ll work on the fundamentals that make the difference: steadiness, handling, retrieving, confidence and developing a dog that understands its job.

Sunday mornings | Suffolk | 6-week block

Places will be limited again so we can actually train each dog and handler properly.

Interested in Group 2? Drop me a message with a little bit about you and your dog. 🐾

Early retrieves tell you so much.

At this age, I’m not looking for perfection — I’m looking at what the puppy naturally gives me.

Desire to retrieve. Confidence. The return. How they carry. How they interact with me when they get back.

From there, I can start making decisions about what to encourage and what we might need to develop.

The important thing is not to rush ahead and start testing them. Teach the behaviours now that will become the skills you need later.

If you’re interested in how I will build those foundations, my free training guide “Why Your Dog Doesn’t Run Straight” is available here - 👇

Bones — creating the behaviours now that will support the important skills we’ll need in the future.

No rush. No testing. Just quietly building the right habits from the start.

Love working with these little pups. ❤️🐾

At this age, I’m assessing what they’re naturally giving me in their early retrieves.

I’m looking at their confidence, commitment and how each component of the retrieve is tackled.

From there, I can start making plans for their development.

Understanding what you’re looking at is a really useful training skill. Before you decide what to teach, you need to understand what the dog in front of you is already telling you.

I’ve put together some of the principles I use when developing straight, confident retrieves in my free training guide:

Why Your Dog Doesn’t Run Straight - And What to do About It

Straight lines start much earlier than you think.

The pups are developing nicely, and at this stage I’m not interested in how far they can run.

I’m interested in building the habits that will matter later — confidence, commitment, understanding and learning to leave with purpose.

Get those foundations right and we can gradually add distance, cover, obstacles and difficulty.

If your dog bends, hunts early, pulls towards old falls or loses confidence as the distance increases,
I’ve put together a FREE Gundog Training Guide explaining the system I use to develop straight, confident retrieves. You can download it here:

And as always, teach — don’t test.
