✨ 🐈 Fun Fact Monday: Did you know that when cats headbutt your hand, it's not just a sign of wanting your attention (though it is this as well), but it's also them marking you as their territory? This is called head bunting, and with scent glands all over their bodies, head bunting is one method cats employ for marking what's theirs. 😺 More specifically, cats use this method for their favourite humans, other cats, and sometimes even dogs. So it means they really love you ❤️ 🐾 ✨

✨ 🐾 It's Monday, but today it's not a "fun" fact but an important story to know: the story of Laika, the cosmonaut dog. Laika (a nickname meaning "barker" in Russian), was a stray dog sent to certain death by being launched into space on Sputnik II. She was the first living creature to orbit the earth, in November 1957 (chosen by Khrushchev to align with the 40th anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution).

Though she was sent with only one meal and a 7 day oxygen supply, she was also treated before launch: one of the scientists gave her a last meal and another took her home for a short while before her mission, as he "wanted to do something nice for her".

In the 30 years that followed, several countries issued stamps with her likeness. Laika also now has her own dedicated statue and features in another statue of fallen cosmonauts, both in Moscow, and NASA scientists named a spot on Mars after her.
