Recovered after his seizure.. This little TJ pony, now 28, has been a treasured part of our family for 25 years. There are some things that are so rare in horses that we may never in a career see them, or maybe only see them once. TJ had a full body seizure yesterday, it was the first prolonged and serious seizure I have seen, after nearly 20 years as an equine vet. The seizure started about 5 minutes after I had finished a fairly minor surgery that had been uneventful. It came in waves of increasing and decreasing intensity over a period of 10-15 minutes until I was able to control it with drugs and help his body to relax. I am delighted to say he seems to have made a full recovery with no long lasting effects, and avoided any serious injury, and all people were kept safe. An enormous thanks to Sonia the equine medicine specialist at Endells for being on the end of the phone and providing me with immediate drug doses to protect his brain and settle his body, and advising on ongoing management. The lovely pony will be maintained on high doses of anti-inflammatories for his brain, as well as aspirin in case it was a clot formed during surgery that triggered the event. So far all is going well and I hope my sister and I will have many many more years with this most wonderful pony.
