🐾Engagement – The Foundation of Dog Training! 🐾

One of the most important skills we can teach our dogs is engagement, and it's something that plays a huge part in almost everything we do in training!

💡But what is engagement, and why does it matter?

Engagement is about building a dog who wants to pay attention to you, regularly checks in and sees you as someone worth listening to, even when the world around them is full of exciting distractions! 🐕🌍

Whether we're working on:

🐾 Loose lead walking, encouraging our dogs to stay connected with us rather than pulling towards everything around them.

🐾 Recall, building a dog who wants to come back to us, even when there are exciting things happening elsewhere.

🐾 Reactivity, helping our dogs learn to reconnect with us and respond to guidance around distractions.

🐾 Everyday manners, creating better communication and teamwork in day-to-day life.

Engagement is a key part of it all!

It's not about expecting our dogs to stare at us constantly or ignore the world around them. It's about teaching them that checking in with us is rewarding and that we're worth paying attention to.

And remember, engagement doesn't just happen automatically in distracting environments. It's a skill we need to build, practise and reward, starting in easier environments and gradually working up to more challenging ones.

So here's a little question for you…

What would your dog LOVE to do with you right now? 🐶

Would they love a game of tug? A fun chase game? Searching for treats in the grass? Or simply exploring somewhere new together?

Think about what your dog finds rewarding, because that's where great engagement begins!

The more we understand what our dogs enjoy, the more opportunities we have to build that connection and make training something they genuinely want to be part of.

Good engagement builds connection, and connection makes training easier!🐾💚

👇 Tell me in the comments, what's your dog's favourite thing to do with you?

🐾 TRAINING AVAILABILITY UPDATE 🐾

November is now FULLY BOOKED for all 1.2.1 training sessions! 🥰🐶

Thank you so much to everyone who continues to support and trust me with their dogs! ❤️

📅 DECEMBER AVAILABILITY

I will only be taking on a limited number of new puppy package bookings in early December. 🐶🐾

I know how important those early weeks and months are for puppies, and I don't want them missing out on that valuable time to get started with their training, socialisation and confidence building.

🐕 REACTIVITY & ADULT DOG TRAINING

Any new clients looking for help with reactivity, behaviour struggles or general adult dog training will now be looking at JANUARY 2027 for their first appointments.

I really appreciate everyone's patience and understanding. I always want to make sure each dog and owner gets the time, attention and support they deserve, rather than squeezing too many appointments in. ❤️

📩 My January diary is open for enquiries, so please don't wait until January to get in touch if you're hoping to book!

Thank you all again for keeping me so busy🐾❤️

🐾 Want more of the behaviours you love? Capture them!

Training your dog doesn’t always have to mean asking them to do something.

Sometimes, the most powerful thing you can do is simply notice when they get it right.

Your dog settles quietly while you’re having a coffee? Reward it.
They choose to look at you when another dog passes? Reward it.
Four paws stay on the floor when they’re excited? Reward it.
They relax on their bed without being asked? Yep… reward that too!

This is called capturing behaviour, reinforcing a behaviour your dog offers naturally, rather than prompting or cueing it first.

And it can make a BIG difference.

When behaviours consistently lead to good things, dogs are more likely to offer them again. Over time, those little everyday choices can become strong habits.

✨ Calmness
✨ Checking in with you
✨ Settling
✨ Choosing not to jump
✨ Walking nicely
✨ Making good choices around distractions

Don’t just wait for unwanted behaviour and then try to fix it.

Catch your dog being good.🐶💛

You might be surprised by just how much there is to reward.

🐾 SOCIAL WALKS ARE COMING BACK!🐾

Social Walks at First Place Dog Training will be returning for the winter, starting in November! ❄️🐕‍🦺

Our walks will be kept to small groups, giving you and your dog plenty of space while enjoying a relaxed, supportive walk together.

✨ Why join a Social Walk?

🐶 Practise calm behaviour around other dogs and people
🐶 Build your dog’s confidence in a controlled environment
🐶 Work on loose-lead walking and focus around distractions
🐶 Help your dog learn that they don’t need to greet every dog they see
🐶 Put your training into practice in a real-world setting
🐶 Enjoy a friendly, supportive walk with other dog owners

These walks are about calm, positive social experiences, not dogs playing together, making them a great opportunity to practise simply being around other dogs.

📅 Starting in November
