Around 4 weeks ago Nellie was diagnosed with Osteomyelitis following a nail bed infection. An infection that was thought to have healed up with a seven day course of antibiotics - but had actually gone deeper and affected the bone.

X-rays confirmed the infection and she was started on a 6 week course of two different types of antibiotics.

The vet was pleased with her progress but we won’t know for sure until the follow up x-rays if the infection has responded well to the medication. Otherwise the first digit of her toe may require amputation.

She has been on rest from training and sport training for four weeks now, and we are beginning to resume gentle exercise and light training, as well as strengthening the muscles in the leg and building her back up again.

It is important that when she returns to more intense activities, that she doesn’t injure herself further.

This has been a really difficult time for both of us, but she has done really well at adjusting considering and hopefully we will get the all clear in a couple weeks.

It is so important to take any infection seriously - there were only subtle signs that there was something wrong and if they had been ignored then we would have been looking at a far worse situation. Ive made peace with her digit being amputated - if that’s what will give us peace of mind and mean she can get back to life sooner - I know she will adjust and take it in her stride. But for now we have a lot of faith in her treatment plan. 🙏🏼

Lots going on here, exposure, working on engagement and impulse control around distractions, some obedience and confidence building working on different surfaces.

If you own a dog in London you need to set them up for success in London. Which means exposing them to everything the city has to offer that they might come into contact with in their day to day life. Loud noises, lights, unpredictable and erratic people, random objects in the street that seem out of place. A London dog needs to be ok with the pace of this city at every turn.

Whether you have are thinking about getting a dog, have a puppy or an adult dog that is struggling with life in the city, get in touch.

Working on staying on the place bed around distractions.
A good exercise for self control around distractions.
Using a duration marker and adding in
- distance
- duration
- distraction
Nellie does well at this exercise because a)she has a strong duration marker and b)because I’ve done a lot of this with her since I got her so there is a very strong reward history to be being on the place bed

I don’t use stay or wait in this exercise. Just a duration marker and a release cue.

Happy New Year!

2025 was a huge year for PMK9.
🐾 Our group training walks and classes grew and now take place every week in Beckenham and Hither Green
🐾 Nellie the bull herder joined us, my first puppy and first working/sport dog
🐾 We held our first workshop
🐾 Organised our biggest group walk with thirteen dogs
🐾 Nellie took her part in her first puppy trials coming 2nd and 6th
🐾 The PMK9 community evolved and we now have an incredibly supportive whatsapp group for regular and dedicated clients
🐾 We welcomed new dog walking clients and had another great year with our long-term regulars
🐾 Survived another year with Buster the cat

Amongst all the highs, there were some lows and we sadly lost Louie, Ruby & big Lenny who will always hold a special place here at PMK9. Grateful for the lovely walks and memories I have with them 💕

We wish everyone a Happy New Year, let’s see what 2026 has in store 🐾
