Introducing grooming to your pup 🐶 Start at Home..
Grooming can be stressful for a puppy who doesn’t know what to expect. To help ease any anxiety and the possibility of difficult behavior, get them used to the idea of grooming at home.
Every day for a few weeks leading up to their first appointment, take the time to:
Pop your pup on a raised surface, even a coffee table will do, just to get them used to the idea of being up high, like the groomers table.
Run your hands up and down your dog’s legs.
Handle your dog’s ears, mouth, and face (specifically near the eyes, you can use a teaspoon around this area to get them used to something shiny been in front of them)
Brush your dog all over, including his legs, body, and face with the correct brush for their coat type.
Wiggle and massage your dog’s toenails.
Gently hold your dog’s tail.
If you have an electric toothbrush, you can also turn it on and run the handle down their back, legs and top of their head, it will help your puppy to get acclimated to the noises and vibrations, similar to the clippers we use in the salon.
Schedule Grooming Early & Often
The younger the puppy is, the easier it will be to train, Ideally get them booked in with your chosen groomer as soon as they’ve had their second vaccinations.
Your puppy’s first session should be short and sweet, it’s All about introducing the smells, sounds, tools and handling that they will encounter in the salon, these sessions will be tailored to your pup and will usually include the following, bath and a gentle blow dry and brush out, if your pup is relaxed enough we will endeavour to include, hygiene trim, paws and pad trim, nail clip and a tidy up round they’re eyes.
Puppy introduction sessions are all about building confidence, introducing every aspect of grooming slowly over a few sessions.
Keep Up with Grooming at Home
After your dog is groomed, it’s typically 3 - 4 weeks until thier next appointment. During that time, keep up with brushing and combing through their coat regularly at home.
If approached the right way, these simple steps can help prepare your puppy to establish a trusting, lifelong relationship with their groomer. 🫶
