A happy dog is a dog who gets to explore 🐾🌿

Giving dogs opportunities to sniff, explore and experience the environment is just as important as training. Not every walk needs to be about heelwork and obedience — sometimes they just need to be dogs. 💙

The skill of doing nothing 🐾

One of the most valuable things we can teach our dogs is something that looks like… nothing.

In this video, Comet is simply sitting with me and taking in the environment.

There’s no game.
No trick.
No command.
No expectation to constantly engage with me.

And that is the point.

This might look like a low-distraction environment — but it isn’t completely distraction-free. There are smells from dogs and people who may have been here earlier in the day, sounds in the distance and enviromental movement around us.

Comet doesn’t need to investigate every smell, react to every sound or constantly find something to do.

He can simply be present.

Teaching our dogs this skill is incredibly important because we live in a world where they are constantly stimulated.

But dogs also need to learn how to switch off.

Doing nothing is a skill.

It teaches them that being in an environment doesn't always mean something needs to happen or they need to be doing something.

It teaches them to observe without always reacting.

It teaches them to settle, regulate themselves and become comfortable simply existing alongside us.

And perhaps most importantly, it gives them the opportunity to learn that calm doesn't mean boring — calm is a behaviour worth practising.

So next time you're out walking try sitting with your dog for a while and just be still for a minute or so.

Don't ask for anything.

Let them sniff the air.
Watch the world go by.
Notice what they're noticing.
Give them time to process.

You might be surprised by how much learning happens when you stop asking them to do anything at all. 🤍

The art of doing nothing might just be one of the most important skills we teach our dogs.

THIS is what it's all about 🥹❤️

Just last week, having both dogs together felt completely overwhelming and one of their owner's goals was simply to be able to enjoy walking them together.

Today I got this update…

Their second walk together and she got home and had a wee cry because she was so happy. 🥹

They had manage to spend an hour together on a walk, came home and the Golden even managed to settle without a sound — a huge achievement when you compare it to where they were starting from. The vets even had the Golden on medication for anxiety and it did NOTHING!

Is everything magically fixed in a week? Of course not.

But these are the moments that matter.

Training isn't always about creating the “perfect” dog instantly. Sometimes success is being able to do the ordinary things you desperately wanted to be able to do with your dogs.

I advised my client to brag away about her achievements. 👏❤️🤣

They are absolutely smashing it.

Camera detected. Model mode activated.

Someone knows their angles 😂📸🐾

This one is a true little sassy pants too 🐕 Im sure her lovely owners would agree!

Proof that even the trainer’s dog has two modes: majestic professional ✨ and absolute chaos goblin 😂🐾

Balance is important, right? 😅

Same route. Same walk. Two completely different approaches 😂🐾

⚡ Collie: The aim is to cover as much ground as physically possible.
🌼 Golden: The aim is to smell every single blade of grass.

One’s training for the Olympics.
The other’s reading the local news. 😂

Wouldn’t have them any other way ❤️🐶

WE’RE BACK 🐾☀️

The gang were all out nice and early today to avoid the hottest part of the day 🌿💦

A little reminder for dog owners during warmer weather:

It’s not just the air temperature you need to think about… your dog’s arousal levels matter too.

A highly aroused / over-aroused dog is already running hotter internally through excitement, stress, constant movement or overstimulation. So even if it’s “only” 20°, their body temperature can climb much higher, much faster 🥵

Hot weather + high arousal = a risky combo.

My top tips:
🐾 Opt for shorter walks
🌳 Stick to shaded areas
💦 Walk near water where possible
⏰ Get out early morning or later evening
🧠 Focus on calmness over chaos

Sometimes the best thing we can do for our dogs is slow things down a little 💚

How has your dog been coping in the heat? ⬇️

Place is a life skill. 🧠🐾

This is what a proofed place command looks like in the real world: calm, focused, and reliable… even with fast-moving distractions like bikes passing by.

But here’s the part most people skip ⬇️
Dogs don’t just know place.

It’s built step by step:
• First in the house (low distraction)
• Then around the house (more movement, more noise)
• Then outside (new environments)
• Adding duration (how long they stay)
• Adding distance (how far you move away)
• And finally, real-life distractions like this 👆

If your dog struggles in public, it doesn’t mean they’re “stubborn” — it usually means the foundation hasn’t been fully built yet or properly.

Slow it down. Be consistent. Raise criteria gradually.

That’s how you get a dog who can truly switch off anywhere. 💯
