An unusual walk with Oscar today, and one that left me with that familiar feeling of frustration.

Once again, I've got the good dog, while the owners seem to be getting the naughty Oscar.

Within the first few minutes, I had a calm, chilled-out boy who was doing everything I'm guessing his owners would love to see more of. We only headed out for a short walk today due to the heat, and unfortunately it had already reached my cut-off point for longer walks.

The upside of that was it gave me another opportunity to spend some time in Oscar's home and see if any of the behaviours his owners have been telling me about would make an appearance. As much as I'm a dog walker, I sometimes feel my skills are better suited to helping with the behavioural side of things, so being able to observe those moments would be really useful.

Unfortunately for me, Oscar had other ideas.

After a very short 20-minute walk in this ridiculous heat, he was completely chilled out. Mum was relaxed, the pups were relaxed, and everyone was happily doing very little at all.

So instead, it turned into a nice catch-up over a drink, chatting about old times, the old neck of the woods, and people we both know. Meanwhile, the dogs were perfectly content doing absolutely nothing, which meant I still didn't get to see any of the behaviours I'd been hoping to work with.

It's one of those typical moments where you actually want a dog to misbehave a little so you can help, but today just wasn't that day. No doubt the opportunity will come up again.

Just three walks for me today. The weather is simply getting too hot now, and I suspect tomorrow and Friday will be much the same. Then hopefully this heatwave will disappear, and we can get back to normal again.

Another lovely little walk around the woods with Tanks today. I’d say it was a nice cool one, but it’s already warming up nicely out there.

It was a busy walk this morning, and I think people are starting to recognise who I am now. With the heatwave we've been having, it seems like a lot more people are getting out earlier, so over the last few days I've been seeing more and more of the regular faces, stopping for a quick chat, and it's been lovely. Most days, me and Tanks either don't see anyone or only pass the odd person here and there, but recently it feels like everyone's out and about.

It's been great having a few more conversations, and Tanks has been enjoying the extra social time and the occasional bit of play. Most of the time, though, he's quite happy doing his own thing, as always.

A busy old woodland walk this morning for me and Tanks.

With the temperatures climbing, there were a lot more people and dogs out early than usual. It's great to see so many owners adjusting their routines and getting their dogs out before the heat really starts to kick in.

One of the nice things about busier mornings is getting to catch up with familiar faces. Tanks certainly enjoyed all the extra attention, fuss, and socialising from people we don't always bump into. It's amazing how many people know him around the woods now, and it's always lovely hearing them ask after his owner and send their best wishes.

Of course, busier woods also mean coming across dogs with varying levels of social skills. One dog seemed determined to have a go at Tanks for absolutely no reason, but true to form, he couldn't have cared less. He took it all in his stride and carried on with his walk as if nothing had happened.

I also had a nice chat with another dog walker. Rather than talking dogs, we ended up talking shop and comparing the different sides of the industry. I focus mainly on solo walks and behaviour work, which gives me the time to help dogs build confidence, manners, and good habits. She works with larger groups, which brings its own challenges and rewards. It was interesting hearing each other's perspectives and being reminded that no matter how different our approaches are, we're all working towards the same goal of happy, well-cared-for dogs.

Apart from that, it was simply a lovely walk with Tanks. A busy one, but a good one, and another reminder that getting out early is definitely the way to go this week.

A lovely little Monday stroll with Gunner this morning, and I think early starts are going to be the theme of the week as we try to stay ahead of the heat.

Unfortunately, there are quite a few dogs I won't be seeing this week as the temperatures are set to climb a little too high for some of them. Luckily for Gunner, he has a stream just a six-minute walk from home, which makes keeping cool much easier. We spent plenty of time splashing around, playing a bit of fetch in the water, and enjoying the countryside.

At the moment, Wednesday looks like it could be the only day that's a little too hot even for Gunner. The rest of the week should still be manageable with earlier walks and plenty of opportunities to cool off in the stream.

A pretty good way for a water-loving Labrador to spend a Monday morning.
