Pawcentric dog training

Pawcentric dog training Reward-based, force-free training based in Great Mongeham near Deal. Covering Deal, Dover, Folkestone, Thanet and all surrounding areas.

Offering groups & 1:1 training options. Qualified, science-based, professional & up-to-date đŸŸ. 1st class degree in animal science. My dissertation focused on repetitive stress behaviours in captive red squirrels, I went on to present my findings to the zoo itself at there own conference. After completing my degree I then went on to work in rescue kennels for 4 years. Currently working towards bein

g an accredited behaviourist with IMDT. Certified SA (Separation Anxiety) Pro Trainer. Agility competitor at grade 7 (championship level). Won YKC (Young Kennel Club) obedience finals at Crufts 3 years in a row. (As far as I’m aware we are the only competitors in YKC obedience to have achieved this!)
This was all achieved with my anxious, ‘reactive’ dog Kez that I rehomed when she was 18 months old. Passionate about up-to-date science based training. My dog training journey started when I took on a highly people and dog reactive Springer spaniel at the age of 14. Since then I have been on a journey learning as much as I can about the world of dog training and behaviour. I have a particular interest in reactivity and fear-based behaviours as a result of this. When I started out I couldn’t find any trainers or behaviourists that would help me (things have changed since then!) and so I make sure to always be there for all my clients as someone to turn to when things do get tricky. I love my job, and I am always striving to be the best I can be. As a result I have lots of courses and further education ongoing at the moment so that I can always offer the best to my clients.

Teaching dogs to relax, co-exist & just be is one of the most important skills we can teach them. Some dogs find it harder than others
especially breeds that are bred to constantly be on the go & working. But
doesn’t mean we can’t still help them do it.

A dog that is able to relax & feel safe is what we all dream of. Those are the dogs we can take anywhere, that genuinely enjoy their walks and are a pleasure to have with us.

Many dogs need help with this. We all have expectations of what we want it to look like when we get a dog. However - so often it ends up not being what we expect

I promise it’s possible though. And one of the most amazing parts of the training journey is a whole new social life with others who have faced similar journeys
.

After this Reconnect walk a few of us went & got fish & chips together (with the dogs) because - why not?!

If you’d like to find out more about what we do & how we can help you please do get in touch. We are on a mission to help dog owners feel more connected, enjoy walks & make friends along the way 💜.

What. A. Day 😅. We had an exciting new venture today - Pawcentric hosted a collaborative ‘mantrailing taster day’ for my Pawcentric clients with Dylan & Julie from Kent Dog Sports Ltd. We had SO much fun!!

2 full sessions of dogs all trying their hand at mantrailing. We had SO much fun 🙌.

This is only open to Pawcentric clients (current or previous) - our next taster day is on 28th June

If you’d be interested let me know! Spaces are strictly limited

Mantrailing is a fun scentwork based activity teaching dogs to find missing people for fun! It’s mentally tiring, amazing for building confidence in dogs that can be worried by strangers & generally great fun.

It works so well alongside current training plans too
all the dogs (all 11 of them!!) on today’s sessions are all undergoing training plans of some form with me. My job was to guide/ support/ advise whilst Dylan & Julie did the mantrailing part. It worked beautifully 🙌💜.

We had a lovely evening in the sunshine practicing our mat training on a busy seafront 💜.

A few of us even went & got fish & chips after too!

Our Reconnect walks are not just ‘walks’. They are training opportunities. They are about bringing people & dogs together socially. We laughed, we relaxed, we joked, we had fun
and we practiced those all important skills.

Yesterday I met 11 month old Skye for an initial assessment 1:1 session. Oh my god - I’m in love đŸ„°.

Skye is a GSD cross Dogue de Bordeaux and as such - is huge 😂. She does not know her own size!

We introduced some training around people coming in/ out the house, settling & some confidence building exercises outside the house. Skye is a rehome so she was showing some signs of overwhelm when out on walks.

We now have a plan to help her moving forwards. I’m looking forward to hearing how she progresses & seeing her soon for more cuddles đŸ„°.

Wow
what a session to end the day on. We’ve been working with Sascha for over a year now
both Abbey & I have been doing regular 1:1’s during that time gradually building her overall confidence and exposing her to other dogs in a careful way

It was one of those moments today where we go
 wow.

At points in the journey we never ever thought we’d get here.

But we did 🙌.

Here’s Sascha - relaxing on her mat with Winnie basically right next to her. I brought Incy out too as a 2nd stooge and alternated between. We also had many dogs walking around us and kids playing football. She wasn’t phased by any of it.

At the end
she properly came out of her shell and was leaning into us for cuddles, playing & jumping all over us đŸ„č💜. Sascha is a rescue who was so shut down when I first met her - so quiet & just didn’t show much of her true self at all. So to see this today
 well it was quite something.

So proud. So so proud 💜💜.

Bruiser knows how to show off the ‘staffie sprawl’ in his mat training đŸ€Ł.

He’s such a fun boy! He just gets super excited about everything/ everyone but also gets overwhelmed easily
so really struggles to focus & engage outdoors. We’ve introduced a training plan to help him & I’m so looking forward to seeing him again in a couple of weeks to see the progress 🙌.

Today I saw little Mango for an initial 1:1 to look at his reactivity. I saw him first last week at Pawfest so already had an idea of what was going on - but it’s always fascinating to dive deep into exactly what’s going on so that we can introduce the appropriate training plan.

Mango is interesting as his reactions to other dogs/ people are a mix of fear & frustration. There’s both in there - which means a typical ‘fear-based reactivity’ training plan would never work for him. He actively wants to make friends but at the same time is scared

Which means he needs appropriate socialisation. He needs appropriate exposure to dogs who will help build his confidence. And that’s exactly what we will do - we started this today đŸ’Ș.

Alongside training techniques to help improve his engagement & focus in situations he finds tricky. Here he is smashing the 1-2-3 game - which we’ll then take out into the real world on future sessions.

I’m looking forward to seeing Mango progress - he did amazing today 🙌.

In the world of dog training we focus so much on dogs walking by our side or coming back when called
 or ‘doing as their told’

But actually - all I’m really interested in is our dogs living their best lives.

Dogs didn’t ask to be living in our human world with leads, houses, baby gates, us humans having to go out to work, cars, roads
they don’t understand any of that.

Yet they adjust to it all so well - we do not give them enough credit for that.

Basics like lead- walking & recalls are important, of course they are. It means we can take our dogs out & they can relax
whilst we can relax too. It means we can all enjoy the world
 together
and that’s ultimately what it should always be about.

Sometimes
we forget that. We lose ourselves in our dogs being ‘naughty’ or wanting ‘control’ over them. Or them fitting into our lives. How often do we hear ‘well they’ve just got to get used to it’. Do they though?

It should be about our dogs living their best lives. Being able to fully relax and live life to the fullest.

That’s what dog training should always be about
 and if it’s not
it means we are focusing on the wrong thing
 đŸŸ.
