Today is the hottest day of the week, with temperatures into the high 30s and feeling close to 40 in places. Dogs overheat far faster than we do, so a few small things right now make a real difference.
Cool them down
Skip the walk. Or go after dark only, and never on hot pavement.
Water everywhere. Several bowls, topped up, a few ice cubes in each.
Make a cool spot. A frozen water bottle wrapped in a towel, or a damp towel chilled in the fridge and laid on the floor.
Keep them still and indoors. Save play for when it cools down.
Is your dog coping? Here is how to tell.
A lot of what you will see today is completely normal. Dogs are built to slow down in the heat.
A quieter, sleepier dog is a sensible one, not a poorly one. Do not worry if they are flat and dozy today.
Normal in this heat
Panting more than usual, in a steady, settling rhythm
Sleeping more and slowing right down, with little interest in walks or play
Drinking more, and seeking out cool floors and shade
A slightly smaller appetite
These signs are an emergency
Frantic, heavy panting that will not settle even at rest
Thick drool or foaming at the mouth
Bright red, or very pale, gums
Wobbliness, stumbling, or looking dazed
Vomiting or diarrhoea
Collapse
If you see anything from that list, start cooling straight away with whatever water is cooler than your dog, and call your vet at once. Getting them cool fast is what matters most.
Keep them cool, keep them calm.
Hopefully this exceptional weather, as nice as it is, eases off by the weekend!
